In the mac world every program can create .pdf files which are not linked to any particular browser. It is done through the print function. One option under print is .pdf which allows you to create and store a .pdf file anywhere, to email a .pdf file, etc. Since the function is built into the OS and not the individual applications, it works seamlessly. Once you create a .pdf file, especially one that has lots of photos or other graphics, open it in Preview. Then do a save as and under the Quartz Filter drop down list select "reduce file size". That will remove all but the formatted version of the photos or graphics, smash out all the unused formatting stuff and produce a universally readable .pdf file that is much smaller than the original without loosing any of the readability. I use it all the time for my books and manuals. Slick.

There are other programs that will read and create PDF files.
Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Pro for example.

In the Mac world there are several others such as Preview.
