Armand,

Many thanks for the link.

Jim Rowe did a great job -- I look forward to spending more time reading the article in depth.

Wow, Thanks Armand,

For those of you that can read and absorb all of it, you are now a large portion of the first part of the Fastening Systems 101 that doesn't seem to be part of any engineering curricula at the larger schools anymore. A lot of very important stuff there.

I'm unable to see the pdf from the website. Both Safari and Firefox say that there is a missing plugin, but none can be identified.

Is it possible that something on the website is broken, or failing that, could the pdf be posted somewhere else also?

Larry,

Do you have the Adobe Reader plug-in?
Can you see a link to:<jim-rowe-fastener-presentation.pdf>?

The site is working.

Neither one of those work? What browser are you using? Do any links work for you? Maybe it is some kind of security setting?

Using Internet Explorer, not sure what version; 7 or 8, I think.

It seems that some part of those URLs must be missing.

Well, Firefox on my PC at work displayed the pdf perfectly. I wonder what the issue could be - from home I was using my Mac, but an older version of Firefox, but the latest version of Safari.

The url's for the web site are:

www.gmcws.org - this is the old site which has not changed
www.gmcws.org/blog - this is a new section of the old site
or
blog.gmcws.org - an optional way to get to the previous link

I just noticed that I am not putting the http:// in front of the urls which may make them not work in your browser(?) because the forum is not making them links. Let's try this:

I found the discussion of liquid thread lock to be particularly interesting. In a past career I worked with corrosion resistant products, mostly FRP and various resin coatings, linings, and grouts. I had never thought about the added corrosion resistance that thread lock adds to a bolt by simply displacing water. With thread lock on the bolt there just isn't room for water to pool, thereby reducing the chance of rust. And I never knew about Cut vs Rolled threads.

Thank you for posting this. I found it very interesting.

Now this evening, every thing is working as it should. I did nothing different in acquiring the web site. I high light the address in your first post and right click. Then I select open in a new tab on the window that comes up. It worked. I did the very same thing this morning... nothing. Anyhow, got it.

Armand,

Thanks for posting that. Jim Rowe did us a real service by providing it.
Despite many years of studying, reading about, and using threaded
fasteners, I learned a lot. I was especially surprised at the load
distribution vs thread count; I'd always heard the first 3 threads took
most of the load -- far more than now indicated.

I guess the "split lock washers are no longer specified" means we can no
longer use the old saw: "A Cadillac is just a Chevrolet with lock
washers." :-)
