Dolph,
This is the first time I've seen that statement. I don't know whether to
interpret it as "there's a new bracket" or "there's no longer a bracket".
I suspect the former.
If you've got it, why not keep it?
That said, when I installed the Cad500, using a custom motor mount, I made
no provision to secure the front end of the final drive. I'm not worried
about it.

The parts book shows that bracket but says "prior to 1977". It doesn't show any bracket for the 1977-78 vehicles.

In the 77-78 repair manual, it says something to the effect of "no longer
fitted" on the section about that bracket.

Manny,
Do you think it's important for me to add a similar bracket to my Cad500?

Ken,
Think about the torque of that 500 causing the ring gear to try
to climb the
pinion gear and flexing the aluminum tranny case. Makes me
nervous.

Yeah, but they reduced the brace to one cantilevered 1/2" bolt. The Cad
bracket on the OEM motor mount didn't look like much, IIRC. If I need to
remove the mount again, maybe I'll do something...

One of the things I hate about having half an engineering degree is not fully understanding the amount of force that grade 8 half inch bolt is relieving from the drive and transmission case.

Half a degree?
If an engineering degree has a half life of five years, I now have about 1/256
of a degree.

The bracket was not used on factory 403 installations.
All 455's came with the bracket

Ken,
You don't have to remove the mount. Just the lower bolt that
goes through
the bracket onto the block. Since you have EFI, you could have
installed
the bolt from the front. That would mean remove the nut at the
rear.

Huh? I don't understand that at all. I sure don't understand what EFI's
got to do with it (maybe the missing fuel pump?). Remember, I have my own
design front motor mount. As I recall the 68-72 mount, there was just a
tab to bolt the FD and no attachment to the block. I'll take a look
tomorrow to see if I can figure a way to bolt things up.

Dennis,
No, I had not seen that. My memory of the 68-72 motor mount is very poor
-- is that what's shown, or another one? I thought the FD bracket was a
part of the motor mount, but that looks, perhaps because of the paint, as
if it's a discrete part. If I had one of those, it would bolt right up
with my custom mount. If I can borrow one somewhere, I'll make one.
Otherwise, I'll try to copy it from the photo.
THANKS!

Yep, that be the one. If you don't have a carb fuel pump or the
factory fuel
pump(as shown), you can put the bolt in from the front and just
remove the
nut. Personally, I welded the nut on the inside for the 1/2"
bolt cause it was
too much of a PITA.

Ken,
I have several, including one I had powdercoated be fore I
decided to
weld the nut on the inside.
