I was just reading about the several fires that have occurred in Chevrolet Volts after crashes or crash tests, and in one test, three weeks later.

But, I don't really care about that.

I just want that 300volt, 50+Ah battery. That could be a 1200Ah house bank. Or, with the right electronics package, how about the only DC left on board is the chassis battery. 16KWhr will go a long ways. So what if it weighs in at 400 pounds, since I can take out both the APU and the current house bank. The only big problem will be getting enough 12V to run the existing fans and stuff. I hate to think of the size of the heatsink that switching supply is going to need.

Just another foolish dream.

Matt

Matt:

You can put your own together with LiOn cells.

Just you won't get the subsidy, which is about 75%.

Consider the cost of a 55wHr notebook battery and start multiplying.

And don't forget they are depth of discharge, cycle and recharge rate limited.

I did a tour of the Lotus Factory at Hethel, Norfolk England a couple of years ago where they assemble the Tesla Roadsters for Elon Musk.

One of the guys assembling a Tesla told me they have to be extra carefull when drilling into parts of the the combined chassis/battery pack as the current the battery pack delivers can be fatal.

At some level I'm certain the horse drawn carriage folks said that about early automobiles.

Its my understanding that the Volt battery has an extensive cooling system between the cells. So you would need to build a duplicate cooling system to cool the battery. I don't know if its air, water or glycol????

I do wonder what will happen if electric cars do become common and we continue to have power outages as often as we seem to these days. I don't know how the electric grid would be able to absorb all the extra drain without major upgrades.

The idea of an extremely powerful battery instead of a generator is still a nice dream - perhaps someday (unless we can get that flux capacitor thing figured out). Very Happy

George,
Utilities are already predicting problems as new EPA rules force them to shut down fossil power and charging power demand increases, I guess the plan is to get us all to bicycle to work (if there are any jobs left).

And,
It isn't the Flux Capacitor that we really need, it's that Mr. Fusion we need and in a couple of sizes.
