I guess you can get the bolt out once you pull off the manifold, but you could either leave it in place as a guide pin or remove it, clean it up, slot the unthreaded end, and put it back in after chasing the threads in the head & applying anti-seize. The slot is so you can use a screwdriver to remove it if needed. Personally, I'd get it out & replace it.When possible, I don't re-use exhaust manifold bolts. Cheaper in the long run to replace them. I coat the entire bolt from the bottom of the head down with anti-seize. I've seen the bolt rust onto the manifold inside the hole. When it happened, I had the devil's own time getting the manifold off once the bolt head broke off.. Once the manifold came off, the rest of the bolt screwed right out... We were restoring a flathead Ford V-8, so only God knows how long it had been since it had been off.

Just the bolts?

Kelvin coats the whole manifold!

Someday I am going to try it.... maybe on a Onan.

That's another idea I'd missed! Need to try it with some of the
nickle-based anti-seize (2250*F) my NASCAR engine builder friend gave me.
But maybe that won't cook on?

It is amazing the how easy little almost "off hand" comments are to miss!

I suspect the use of "aluminum based" anti-seize is used in this application due to its lower melting point. (Melting is something you would want to happen if you are going to "aluminimze" the cast iron.) While I haven't checked, I suspect it is little cheaper than the nickel stuff that NASCAR uses. They most likely use nickel for a HIGHER melting point.

I understand Kelvin got this idea from the old Datsun world. It DOES make the manifolds look good!

There are views of various parts of my exhaust manifolds in the following album. I spray painted them with VHT header coating and they still look like new three years and 11,000 miles later.
