~ T O W D S ~
My current 'TOWD' has been a green 2000 Hyundai Accent Hatchback
with a 5 speed manual transmission often reffered to as "the Lil Green Towd"
{ my wife simply calls it the Slimy Green Hyundai Accident }
We are seriously considering a 2010 Chevy HHR with the automatic tranny ~
Has anyone had success with the 'Chevy HHR" ?

Love towing my 2006 Chevy HHR. It's a bit heavy, but for a newer model car it's not too bad. One fuse needs to be pulled or you can buy or make your own bypass switch. Even then, it only needs to be pulled if you're going to tow for more than 4 hours at a time without charging the battery in between. Easy to run wiring and install a second set of tail-lights. There is a channel along the running boards that works great for nesting wires and it is easy to get good access to the rear lights. Plenty of room to install secondary bulbs.
The base plate installs easy, although you do have to remove a good bit of the plastic trim up front, the car tracks well and sets up well. Overall, a very good towd if you don't mind the weight. It also makes a very good runabout. Lots of interior space with the back seats folded down, good headroom, good gas mileage. Overall, it's a good car. I have a first production year, so I've had some issues with the front end as we get to 100K but I've heard they were solved on the '07. Also, the brakes can wear quickly and give you some vibration after a while. You have to change the pads when they wear or you'll destroy the rotors quickly. Not sure if they used better material on the later models.
Some minor complaints about the plastic and access to the headlights for changing bulbs is atrocious, but overall it's a nice car with lots of good and makes for a handy, simple, and spacious towd.

I am thinking hard on toad options, as well. I towed a Ranger Pickup and a Sammy behind my old Palm Beach. The Sammy was great but I sold it and bought a new Wrangler when I bought the bus. Now...here I am thinking the Wrangler, at 3,100# before I load it, is too heavy (my opinion). I had no problem bringing my coach home from Illinois, towing the Jeep, even in the hills of the Ozarks, but it seems the "sweet spot" of this coach, when towing, is about 59-60 mph. Not towing, the sweet spot is about 62. I have the 455 and 3.70 running 16.5 OEM wheels.
I like Dan's approach...pull a 1300# VW. I looked at a super beetle convertible only to find I would only save 300# from the Jeep (plus lose the 4WD benefit). I am thinking of another Sammy, but they are hard to find not all boogered up with giant "tars" and lift kits.
So, yes, I am following this thread as well.

I pull Arch's '90 Sidekick. same as a Chevy/Geo Tracker.

A step up from a Samurai, little bigger engine, little better finish. Two roof panels come off for convertible - yea! Little sort of pickup bed in back OR fold up seat for total of four folks. 4 wheel drive with stick or automatic for easy towing. Still only 1900 lbs on the title. I only notice a slight extra weight when pulling off from a stop. Tows great.
Yeah, many of them have been trashed into off road bashers. But there are still some clean ones that already have the towbar plates and towing lights done.

Keep in mind they grew heaver with each year. Also note the four door is only a few hundred pounds more than the two door and for when you are not towing it, is better equipped and has a lot more room.
I had a 95 two door and now have a 96 four door "Sport" model. While lighter than many towds, when towing behind my 403 powered coach, I KNOW the Sport is back there. The 95 two door didn't seem to effect the hill climbing as much....

Friend with SOB used one as a toad for a while. Unfortunately he passed recently, I don't know if it was manual or auto. It travelled 4 down though. He loved it, said it towed nicely too.
