strongly recommend you contact Dave Lenzi - 810-653-3902
he had to do a lot of modifying to get it to fit and has put on seminars on how to do it.

Cameron,
It has been done several times with the Master of the swap is Dave
Lenzi (810 65three-390two). Not an easy and straight forward swap.
Just getting the computer to work and remove all the unnecessary
wiring and inputs took Dave almost 6 months. Dave has made the
presentation on what is necessary and how to do it at several GMCMHI
rallies. He is working to put together a DVD on the presentation and
swap, but the last time we talked a few weeks ago if was still not
finished. If you are not an expert machinist with CNC equipment then
the chances of getting this swap done are extremely difficult. Also
not any Vortex 8100 motor will work either. The block does require
some machining in the bell housing area. Dave will build a kit for
you to make this almost a bolt in job, but you're looking at $5K+ just
for the kit. If your still serious then call Dave and talk to him as
he is always forth coming with information. He is a master machinist
and worked for GM in the prototype department before he retired. He
also has developed all the new front end parts for our coaches.
Really a good guy!

Cameron,
Here's a link to a picture of Dave Lenzi's 8100 Vortec installation.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=36474
I believe he got it on the road in 2009. I have seen a couple of presentations he has made on the installation and it was an awesome
job. It was done the way GM would do it. EVERYTHING is documented properly, all kinds of CAD drawings for the parts, wiring
diagrams, parts lists, etc.
He spent over 200 hours re-programming the engine computer to fool it into thinking it was still in the GM vehicle it was for. The
last time I spoke to him he was still having problems making the cruise control work properly.
When Helen and I visited his home back in 2009 he let me drive it and I can tell you that it runs like a scalded cat!
Here's a graph of a dyno run on a Vortec 8100:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=28951
Note the torque of 410 ft lb @ 1200 rpm - that's diesel territory!
He had to fabricate a raised engine cover.
Regards,
Rob M.

Has anyone done a swap to a Vortec 8100? And if they have are there any
pics on the results?
I am considering doing one but I am concerned about the engine height.

I found an engine to rebuild and all the parts to go with it but it is a
2002.
I spoke with Dave Lenzi ,great guy, and he said that engine needs to be a
2004 or later to get it to work with the software modifications that he did.
He also told me that he had to make 150 parts to make it work.
Has anyone done the replacement with this year engine?
Dave also told me that he had to do some extensive work on the oil pan to
get it to clear the axle.
What other modifications need to be done that any of you know of?
I want to make sure I know what I am getting into and if I have to let the
engine go and wait I well if need be.

Ken Rose did two, Kerry Tandy has one of them in FL right now. Buskirk did
more than one, Hal Kading's coach is in his hangar in Las Cruces, NM at
this time. Dave Lenzi has put together a kit for the upgrade and I believe
JR Slaten is doing the conversion at this time.

Cameron,,,,one of the mods Dave made was to machine the back of the block with a type of portable bolt on end mill tool. It is a HUGE job. Really nice when done,,,,BUT really, really big. I cosidered it but decided after much reasearch to go the Caddy route. Now,,, I have a lathe, TIG welder, mill and good access to a guy who is a real fabricator. I I didn't go with the 454 or L18 route(496). The L18 is a relly great motor. Bored and stroked real truck engine. If you do some reading you'll see almost no "speed" parts for this engine!!! You got to ask why????? No aftermarket speed parts for a near 500ci. engine. Its all because its diffrent, than 454's. It even has a differnt firing order. Not that its bad cause its a relly great truck motor. I spoke to the guys that designed it (I work for GM) about the swap and they said I was nuts. My hats off to Dave because it has a huge number of hurdles and he solved them. Good luck,,,,,,,just my 2 cents worth,,,,,,PL

Hmmm, so is the GM 8.1 in my boat a 454 descendant or the truck engine?

you should ask yourself "why am i doing this"? if it is just for the fun of doing it then do it. if it is for more pulling power then there are easier options like a Cad or a strong 455. many guys approach these coaches as retirement hobbies and do amazing stuff with them. so what do you want?

Dolph,,,,yes, the Vortech 8100 (production code L18) is a Gen VII big block. 348-409 is Gen I. 396, 402,427, 454 is a Gen IV. The L18 shares alot of "size" or architechture as the mark IV. But it has no fuel pump mount/window and the intake mounting is diffrent. Which is why no hot rodders use it. I think thier might be one now for a carb.???? 502 is a siemesed 454 block with no water between the bores with a 4.466 by 4.00 inch stroke. It is considered a mark IV. Wikipedia lists the L18 at 4.25 bore with a 4.37 stroke. Diffrent firing order which means a diffrent cam. I think there is other diffrences but not sure. I drove a few L18's at work and they are very strong. A fellow worker has one in a 3/4 ton Avalanche pulling a 28 foot camping trailer at over 12,000 gross. She states the passing ability is great!!,,,,,PL
