Due to the PO having removed everything related to propane, and my
preference to restore it to as close to original as I can, could someone out
there tell me what model propane heater the coaches originally had? Or one
that would fit using the original openings / ductwork?

GM used both Solaire and Suburban furnaces. I believe the 1978 has Suburban furnace. Someone who has one will have to give you the model number.

Are the duct holes from the previous installation Vertical or
Horizontal...it will help determine the original model.
I have a 2 77's and both have Duo-Therm furnaces...both have side by side
circular holes.

The later 1977s & all 1978s had the Duo Therm furnaces as standard equipment. The external venting is the clue to which make is installed. Check the link below for the identity of those variations.

Ed,
The original models may not be still available, but a direct
replacement could be a Suburban NT-34SP. The NT series a current unit
that could replace the Duo-Therm if you have that make in the coach.
Here is an example of what is available. <http://www.ducktec.com/rvfurnace.htm
> I would avoid for safety reasons buying any used furnace to use
in the coach. The SH & SF series furnaces are a low profile and could
use as Gene has said.

I should not have said direct as the Suburban furnace outlets are in a
vertical alignment. The real problem being that Duo Therm and Solaire
are no longer available.

Looks like I gave you some bad info. Solaire and Duotherm are the OEM ones. People are replacing them with Suburbans.

The intake/exhaust holes through the exterior are arranged horizontally.
Round holes side by side. It would be easier had I seen an original
installation, part of my cabinetry has been replaced. If I'm looking at the
book correctly, the heat blown into the cabin should be direct, with a duct
leading off to the shower/bathroom area. The bathroom duct seem to be
mostly intact.

Good pictures. I suspect Ed's coach (1978 Palm Beach) came with a Duo Therm. (Two round COVERS, side by side... they all had two round HOLES.)

Keep in mind the above information is for later GM upfitted coaches only. Early GM upfitted coaches (like my '73) came with an old style Suburban furnace similar to the NT model but larger. Coaches upfitted by other companies might use many different brands/models. Coachman installed Suburban "NT" furnaces in both my Birches (77 and 78).
