We have had a lot of discussion about new style air bag systems; but there seem to be a lot of owners, including some long time GMC owners, (some who are on the GMCnet) who are staying with the OEM system.

Since there are a limited number of new OEM bags available (high price and that inventory will eventually end), would any of you offer your thoughts and plans? ie, stay with the OEM system until my current bags are ready for replacement, have spares and plan to stay OEM forever, waiting for the next development in air bag replacements, would like a new system but not in the budget,

Look forward to your comments.

Thanks,
Dennis

I'm going with a Southland system this winter sometime, but I want to install JR Slaten air valves and new tires at the same time. About 2K by the time it's all done.

Staying with my current OEM bags until I have to put the spare on. Will then decide whether to buy the bags that Jim K. sells as direct replacements to OEM or build/install mgrue's system. I do not imagine I will ever have enough extra change laying around to go to a four bag "upgrade".

Well I have not really thought about it but it is something to ponder.
The ride on my 1976 Palm beach is next to none. The rear of that thing
is smooth. The front end definitely needs a 1 ton conversion. So I
think I might be a little hesitant to change something that is not
broken. But you are right they will eventually run out of supply.
Maybe buy a few extra sets and that should get me through a few years
and then deal with it when it comes. So that's my 2 cents on that
subject.

When I bought this current coach in september I got it with two blown bags and a compressor that runs but does not blow air. After investigating my alternatives and because I am now financially challenged, lol, I bought 5 used bags for 100.00 each and installed the shrader valve modification with the shutoff valve. Now I have a working system with 3 spares and the time to repair the compressor. My plan would be to stick with this as long as I can.

My OEM bags were replaced by the PO a few years before I bought the coach. Unfortunately, either he or somebody else, put some "Slime" in one of them to try to seal a small leak. This softened the bag enough that it blew out, in my driveway, less than two months after I bought it.

That's a long story to say that my air bags are relatively new (5 yrs and 3 yrs) and, according to Jim Bounds, they should last at least 15 years. I plan to budget for a Quadra bag system eventually, although it is a low priority right now. I believe the Quadra bag to be the best engineered option out there and it should provide a lasting alternative to the OEM. I understand that it also provides some handling and durability advantages to the other designs. True, It is probably the most costly option, but I'm a strong believer in the old adage that "you get what you pay for".

The PO put the quadra bags on my coach, My only concern is with the center
bracket does it limit travel for the rear wheels to 'step over' obstacles as
they were designed to?

I installed a system of my own design. It is not nearly as complicated or well engineered as the QuadraBag system, but it cost about $300 in parts and some welding wire and torch gas. It has held the back end of my coach up for the last 1000 miles or so. all depends on what you are looking for.
