I can't quite picture your connection but never put a washer between the battery cable and the battery post. The battery post and battery cable terminal end must be in direct contact. Most washers have very high resistance and can cause all sorts of problems especially at high current draws. In the marine industry this is specifically forbidden in the standards.

I use a 100% copper washer. Helps keep the wing nut tight.
