I looked in the MM and found the capacity, but couldn't find the spec for viscosity. Did I miss it?

What would be the recommended oil for my 1973 Kohler 4kW generator? Straight 30W or 10W-30 or other? HD? SG? SF? Anybody?

Never mind. It is the OPERATING manual, not the MAINTENANCE manual. I would have thought that checking/changing oil was a maintenance action. Shrug.

Is that a single cylinder 4KW 1800RPM Kohler?  My genset guy calls it a 'thumper'.  4 pole alternator.  I got one in an old Itasca, I use straight 40w detergent.
Incidentally, if it's in a GMC, could you supply pictures of how it's mounted?  I spent two beers this afternoon getting my Junkerac working reliably, and I'd really like to fit the Kohler instead.
Cure for the Junkerac?  Simply unplug the wire to the overtemp and pressure switches.  At some point I may get the upgraded 5PSI oil switch to replace the 10 PSI which isn't 'reliable'.

I love my old Kohler. When I don't hate it Laughing !

Actually it's been running very nice, but I'm too lazy to reach in and adjust the choke (sounds a whole lot easier than it is) so it starts easy. But for the money it's a great generator. I wouldn't spend the money to replace it just to save a decibel or two. It's much quieter than the old pull-start unit I had on the back.

It is a single cylinder unit. Apparently the 4kW Kohler was standard in some (all?) 1973 23' models. I will see if I can round up a camera to take a picture or two. Check out pages 24C-52 through 24C-73 of MM X-7425 from http://www.bdub.net/manuals/X7425/index.html for almost everything you ever wanted to know about the Kohler 4kW.

While not '73's, both my 77 and 78 23 foot coaches have Onan's.

From what I have seen, most of the 23 foot coaches, regardless of year, came with 4kw Onan (Power Drawer) generators. Yes, I do know that some had other generators.

Thanks, I think I got the books on it.  Guy I got the SOB containing it from wanted to 'test' it so he put 12v dorect;y on the coil, toasting it >and< the current limiting resistor plus both relays on the smart board.  I have most of that corrected, and propose to do the genset shuffle when the Junkerac dies.  I favor four - pole gensets cos they usually run quieter.

Only if you replace your spark plugs with some really really hot glow plugs! (GRIN - what a load of bs this is!!! But it's on the internet so it must be true!)
