Peter
Rob indicated that I had posted in the past how to do this. I can't find my old email but I recall what I have done.
The tie rods and knuckles do not have to be removed.
For the drivers side axle removal remove the shock absorber, jack the lower A frame high enough to pull the
axel from the hub and then turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and pull the axel
out from behind the hub. Then you can pull it straight to the outside.
The passenger side is easier but you have to also remove the hanging bracket.
For passenger side remove the oil filter and unbolt the hanging bracket, position the steering wheel straight ahead, jack up the A frame enough to slide the axle
out of hub by moving inner end to the rear where filter was and pull axel out
through the filter area.
I have done this with both original manifolds and with headers.

Emery,
Thanks, Mate!
I've filed this in my CV Joint / Axle Folder.

What Emery said kicked my memory into gear. The procedure he just outlined, above, is exactly how I removed my axle shafts to replace the CV boots. The only thing I did differently was, on Jim Bounds' recommendation, to also remove the starter. Maybe that was not necessary, but it was easy to do and provided a little more room to maneuver the axle out the right side.
Be careful not to do what I did when replacing the starter though, which was to drop the 1/2" ratchet right on my forehead. I had a nice bump for a couple of days!

Carl,
OUCH!
Reminds me of what we used to say in the USAF when someone would drop a tool "good thing you don't work on seaplanes!"

Thinking back, I don't think that was the first time something like that happened to me... Maybe that's why I got into GMCs in the first place.
