Just got my first hint that my newly acquired '73 Canyon Lands 260 (in
Bittersweet; formerly the "Orangeblossom Special") dash indicator labels
and lights format may NOT be stock/standard (shows how much I know!!;^) And
I have a problem with it that now I wonder how many others have this format
of dash indicators, and what fixes are known (confused? Me too).

The only way I can really be clear is to post a picture, so I will... and
here's a link to three of them:

(but I'll try to describe it below in case the links don't cooperate; I put
in both the full web address of all three pix, along with a "Tiny URL" for
each, just in case the long forms don't work for you)

First, a close-up of the lit labels for the idiot lights...

http://s1128.photobucket.com/albums/m491/ckrockettpacbellnet/?action=view
<http://s1128.photobucket.com/albums/m491/ckrockettpacbellnet/?action=view&c
urrent=IMG_2648.jpg> &current=IMG_2648.jpg

or

http://tiny.cc/hkn01

then, a shot of nearby gauges, the idiot lights, and the unlit (and
unreadable) gauges...

http://s1128.photobucket.com/albums/m491/ckrockettpacbellnet/?action=view
<http://s1128.photobucket.com/albums/m491/ckrockettpacbellnet/?action=view&c
urrent=IMG_2642.jpg> &current=IMG_2642.jpg

or

http://tiny.cc/3kzsn

and, a general dash shot, for context...

http://s1128.photobucket.com/albums/m491/ckrockettpacbellnet/?action=view
<http://s1128.photobucket.com/albums/m491/ckrockettpacbellnet/?action=view&c
urrent=IMG_2640.jpg> &current=IMG_2640.jpg

or

http://tiny.cc/5m87a

and now for the description:

this is a vertical row of button-type indicator (idiot) lights for...

> Set Travel

> Gen./Alt.

> Door Ajar

> Low Fuel

> Cruise Cntrl

> Air Comp.

> Park Brake

> Brake Sys.

The lights work fine (as far as I can tell... I haven't sorted out what
"Set Travel" would be lit for). And the script (see list above) is
unreadable unless it's fairly dark and the dash lights are on (as you can
tell in the first pic linked above).

I tried cobbling up a 'decal' on transparent film with the text for each
indicator, and the separator lines, so they would approximately line up and
provide something readable in daylight as well as at night. THAT didn't
work (aside from being a PITA to try to get sized and aligned accurately).

I'm begging for suggestions and hope someone already knows a fix for this.

First off, this is not the standard OEM GMC MH dash and I don't know how many others have a similar dash.

I would love to know how the lighted labels system works. If we knew that we may be able to determine a fix. Is it backlit with incandescent bulbs or electroluminescent wire or LEDs. From the color it looks like it might be EL wire. As far as I am concerned your system is better than stock because at least in bright light you can see that an idiot light is lit.

The "set travel" is a light that comes on for a set period of time when the coach is put in gear to remind the driver to set the powerlevel valves to "travel". When working properly it has, I believe, an annoying buzzer. (Ours is not working)

The stock light is/was a fiber optic cable that ran off a light bulb controlled by the dimmer function in the headlight switch. Over the years the cable degraded or broke making the entire system inop. In addition the stock kit did not illuminate all the dash labels. As I have been told there were few, if any stock GM replacement cables to be had.

Now the fun part, my kit fixes all that!

Hey - I've done this upgrade and it's quick and really works!

Talk about a feel good project. Buy the new fiber cable and new labels toss them in the dash, sit in the coach at night and glow!

I've done this and it's easy!

Did not get this from Paul in Traverse City, MI. From John Shoenfield,
Flint, MI. He was second owner since 1978.

Under other (or eventual) circumstances, I might be interested in restoring
to the original dash. But, for now, we shot our wad on getting her and
doing some 'fixin-up' courtesy Jim Kanomata/Applied GMC (Hi Jim). I kinda
like the dash as is, mostly, but there's a few things to do. I don't know
what feeds the backlighting on the indicators/text in question, but I'll
check that out as soon as I can <btw, sorry for long time getting back...
it's been busy, and I got more than GMC Motorhomes on my mind and agenda...
simply not enough 'round-tuits'.>

Will update as I get the info.

Thanks to all for the responses.

Thanks, but apparently since I don't have an OEM dash (doesn't look like
yours in the pix), your kit will not likely help me. Still sorting it out.
Someone else offered up an original dash, but I can't go there presently.
Not entirely sure I will want to. Will do some sorting out of what I have
first, decide later.

Thanks to all for input.

It looks like John got rid of the troublesome indicator lights in the stock dash. Frankly, what you have is a nice setup. I suspect after you have used the coach for a while, you will know each light by position and color. Other than the cruise light, most should be off in normal operation. I'd leave it as is.
