We had a great time, as Steve and I always do !! Steve's lucky I don't live
closer, he'd have to pull his GMC a tad further into that Man Cave so there
would be room for mine too !

I envy his setup, more room than anyone could want, and now with a
FURNACE.....all it needs is a corner with a couple of nice recliners and a TV
with Satellite dish.....oh, and a good exhaust fan so I could have my cigars
while we watched the Packer or Badger Game on TV ! LOL

Ray

Well I don't know if "WE" always have a great time. When you were doing the Final Drive thing I was having a good time, you, not so much.

Really what the "man cave" needs before recliners, TV's, etc is a CONCRETE FLOOR.

Steve and Ray,

I'm itching to see your pictures. This is about as much fun as I can imagine while sitting in my office trying to get through another (needless) report. Oh, to have the time to play with my coach! At least I can play vicariously.

At his suggestion we used a portapower to spread the frame rails about 1/4" to break the 37 year old bonding between the frame rails and the front clip. Then we used the Kubota BX driven by the CFO (AKA Kubota Girl) to pull it out. Rather than pushing out with two portapowers.

The PO of my coach removed the propane tank, stove/oven, and heater and
swapped to all electric.

I'm interested in restoring the propane appliances. Does anyone know a good
source for a replacement tank? Or know the dimensions/capacity for an
aftermarket tank? I was able to contact a few used GMC parts suppliers, but
they can't ship a used propane tank and none are near me. I'm considering
simply finding one that is a close match or higher capacity. I do wish to
maintain the ability to use the monitor in the coach. Thanks for any
information that may help.

The dual tanks in the compartment would work. The 3 others can be
eliminated as failing some basic safety requirements. Propane is heavier
than air, the tank compartment should be ventilated downward and sealed away
from the coach interior making the original location the best choice.
Mounting on top still won't vent away from the coach as propane will flow
down. I'm still hoping to find something that fits similarly to the original
horizontal tank though.

What's the capacity difference between the stock tank and a couple of 20lb tanks? The practical difference?

Ed, where is 'here'?
I have one in an old Itasca, and a set of appliances.  No idea the integrity of them, but if you're close, come get them.  Tank will likely need new seals or a new valve.  I just resealed tihe one in the driver coach, not a problem.

Dang, Gene, that's the one I was looking for last night but couldn't find. Do you remember the story about the fellow who used this fiberglass propane tank? There was some conversation about it that I thought was interesting, but can't remember the details!

I had to look for this thread. It looks like it got hijacked and is buried in the "front clip" thread.

Anyway, here are some pics of the propane tank that was installed in our coach by a PO:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5675

It is a Manchester tank that has to be filled vertically. Kind of inconvenient, but livable. I think this one is a 30# unit. The gauge does not work either unless it is in the vertical position, so I have to remove it to see how much gas is in it. Very inconvenient. Manchester makes several horizontal mount tanks which should be available at just about any RV supply, or Camping world. Lots of sizes to choose from. It should be fairly easy to come up with something suitable.

Nice install, sure beats having to take the coach to a fill location.

What are the dimensions of the tank Larry??

Picture # 2 of the tank in the closet is an extreme no no. Propane tanks must be sealed from the interior & vented to the exterior.

The picture that showed the fiberglas propane tank was of Fin Bevin's Coach.
He told me the tank was commonly used on forklifts and hot air balloons.
They are transparent enough that you can see the level of propane remaining,
so no gage is required. His hooks up like a barbeque tank and is removed for
filling. The manchester tanks that our coaches came equipped with were
equipped with the latest OPD and do not need to be retrofitted for
compliance. If you just like replacing valves for the added peace of mind
that a new valve (perhaps made in Taiwan) will give you, any propane dealer
should be able to fix you up. If you mount your new tank in a location that
was not previously used for propane storage, be sure to vent it out the
bottom, and put screens over the holes to prevent critters from getting in.
Wouldn't hurt to put a louvered door on the compartment either. Make
absolutely certain that there are no leaking connections, and try to lay out
your tubing runs so that connections are under the coach or in an easily
accessible area where thay can be leak checked each spring when you start
waking you coach from it's long winter's nap. Properly used, propane is on a
par with gasoline as far as safety and hazards are concerned. If you
boondock it, a propane water heater and fridge as well as cooking appliances
will extend your stay & make it more enjoyable. Sure is nice to kick on that
30,000 BTU furnace and have it toasty warm in a few minutes also.

I have one of these tanks

http://www.litecylinder.com/

You can see the gas level plus I can now easily take it out instead of
having to take the coach to the propane place. The old tank now sits next to
my outdoor grill. Also freed up some new storage in propane bay as well as
lightening the coach by 100 lbs. Good trade off I think.

Thanks

I didn't see this in the morning read because I wasn't interested in "pulling a front clip".

I had trouble with the tank in my 23 a couple of years ago and learned that it cannot be replaced with a new tank with anything like the same capacity. New tanks are intended to mount under the frame, as such they all have those big shields over the valves. I was told that you cannot even order a RV service tank that does not have those shields. Codes just won't allow it.

There are quite a number of different tanks that are not intended to be installed that could do well in out couches. In marine service there are all kinds of strange things available - both plastic and aluminum and horizontal are just starters. I like the idea of two removable tanks. If you do a serious web search, you will find some of these strange tanks. They may not be cheap, but if you want less expensive, then figure out how to put bar-b-que tanks in there. That will also make filling in Canada a non-issue. (I have never had to do that, but I am told they they don't like to fill old tanks with old certification.)

I kind of like this idea:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=39892

It gives you the option of running one tank dry and switching to the other while you get the empty refilled. The manchester horrizontal/vertical fill tank I have, does not. I'm always guessing at how much LPG I have left, and usually take the tank our and get it refilled way before I need to. Nothing wrong with that, I guess, but without a working gauge, I would rather have two smaller tanks like the above picture.
