Interesting day yesterday - walked into the local bank around noon, saw a guy laying face down on the carpet. Didn't realize what he was doing until some other guy, standing about two feet to my right, said "get on the ground".
I turned and looked into the ski mask covered face of a gun toting dude who was in the process of an armed robbery. I said "you got it", and hit the deck.
This all happened in a flash, and the whole episode was over in about 90 seconds. The thoughts were 'what is that guy doing on the floor', and 'why is this dude wearing a mask and sunglasses', and 'what's that in his hand'?. Oh, I get it---but in Ridgeville???
The girls behind the counter were visibly shaken and terrified. Turns out the guy laying on the carpet was my brother-in-law. We waited for the sheriff''s guys to come and take statements. Just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Seems the dude had just hit another place about a half hour north of here. Made the 6 o'clock news.
Not a real fun time...was kinda worried that I wouldn't see my birthday on Monday!

With a name like Shotwell, and you and your brother-in-law in the bank being
robbed at the same time, there are surely unseen forces at work here. John
you need to go buy some MegaBucks tickets. The blessing that you received
yesterday is not to be ignored. Greet every sunrise from now on as a special
gift and make the highest and best use of every day. Love your family and
enjoy life. You received a life extension yesterday. I am glad that you were
not harmed nor was anyone else. What banks need are double entry doors,
single width, with a short corridor between them that houses a floor panel
that falls away with a chipper located directly below. When someone robs a
bank, the teller pushes a button, the chipper starts and we can use the
remains to fertilize the trees in the city park. No trial, no court
appointed attorneys, no bleeding heart judges. No early release, no parole.
Society has entirely too many of those people that think they have an
entitlement to that which others have long labored to obtain. I think I will
go work on a GMC and give thanks for the privelage of doing so. I guess
blessings are where you find them. John, again I am glad that you were not
harmed.

Thanks guys - I needed that!
My wife and I took the day off and went up into Michigan to visit a few quilt shops, then we had a nice quiet and romantic dinner on the way home.
We were close to the "American Jewelry and Loan" place west of Detroit, the one on TV called 'Hard Core Pawn', so we stopped and checked it out. That was a trip.
Lying on the floor in the bank, I was really quite calm. I figured the guy was there for the money, none of us were a threat to him, and hopefully he would split when he had what he wanted. The girls said later that he never said anything about harming them, about shooting them, etc. So he did just what I figured, and hoped, he would do.
But the thought did flash through my head that if this was it, then so be it - not much I could do about it. But it was one of the most real experiences I have ever had.
Thanks again for the support - it's sure good to know we all have this great extended family out there!

I suspect the real risk from an event like that would be a cardiac or other
nasty event. Every so often we hear of someone being "scared to death". It
happens!
Glad you are made of stronger stuff!

I worked as a kid in a neighbor's hardware. We kept a pistol available to the register clerk. Instructions were explicit: Give an armed robber anything he wants and don't do something foolish like go for a gun. >IF< he turns away and moves his aim and eyes elswhere, cobsider the possibility, and if you can get a clear shot, knock him down.
Remember, however, theis was rural central Alabama in ther early 60s, and we all were neighbors, knew each other and out capabilities, and had been hunters together for years. None of those situations obtain today. For a masked robber, hit the deck and hope for the best.
Come into the coach at night unannounced, we'll do business though.

Sorry Jim,
But not without great risk to his own person.
The bank has insurance.
Let the bank teller give him the exploding dye pack.
When you walk into a situation where the perp is already in control and you are surprised by it (as I believe John was), the act of going for a weapon is just as likely to end poorly. This according to LEO friends of mine.
Get the best description of him that you can get and pay special attention to his speech as he will disguise his appearance. If his gate (walk) is at all different, that one is a big lead as well.
I am personally very glad that this ended well for John.

I have been present in three different armed robberies in my life. One in Canada, one in Mexico, and one in Indiana. On the one in Indiana I was armed but never let on that I was. It was not my job to stop him.
I never drew my .38 even after he left. In all three robberies the perp was careful not to really point the gun at anyone so there was really never any fear of being hurt. All they were doing was showing a gun so you would comply.
Armed or not, Give him what he wants and let him go. We have people in our society that we pay to chase cars for a living. They have a secondary job to chase bank and business robbers. Leave it to them.

Ken,
Goes to show just how wise you are!
Wasn't there a case where a good Samaritan stopped a crime and the perp did not get convicted and sued the good Samaritan?
