I am not the best guy to write this, but I will. Maybe I made this up, but
I am sure someone will correct me;>)

A little over a year ago, (less than 2), two, young couples, friends and
neighbors, Erica and Corey (http://www.facebook.com/ericajloh) and----, and
Paul and Alana,(http://www.facebook.com/kittyholmes) went out to the delta
to see a GMC .

One of these couples , Paul and Alana, had a dream , to take a year out out
of their life and tour the US ( AND THEY DID IT!).

So, Paul and Alana, took their friends with them, and when they got to the
seller, the coach they went to see was not right for them. But, the seller
had 2 GMC's, so they bought the other one, and their friends (not looking
for a coach) bought the the first one.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/theorem/4657247016/in/set-72157624175337356/

Sometime later, since they knew DC (Desmond) the 2 couples came to last
year's TI rally, with one of the coaches, and a short time later, Paul and
Alana, packed their Kit and Caboodle ( and cute dog) and took off on their
dream cruse around the US for a year.

Many of you met them on the road, and here is their story.
http://50statesorless.com/articles/date/page:1
http://www.facebook.com/theorem

They came back to the TI rally this year,( now the dog owns the coach;>),
this time with both coaches....

what a story
what fun

Gene,

Thanks for bringing this up.

I think that Paul and Alana only found out about the TI event on this list and contacted me. Last year's Fleet Week was their first outing in the coach that they took around the country. It was great that they were able to work out bugs and give it a trial run on a short, easy trip not too far from home.

Corey and Erica were visiting with them and we eventually learned that they had another coach that wasn't quite ready yet (read: they were still tearing it down back then!)

After a year of some pretty major work, this was Corey and Erica's first trip in their coach. Corey had only driven it from the spot where it was purchased, to Paul's house overnight, then to the storage yard where they were working on it. They've been rebuilding nearly everything in the coach. Corey is an industrial designer and did an especially nice job on a new frame and counter for the kitchen unit, hopefully he'll share the links to his pictures on the photo site.

When their Eleganza II arrived, the dinette was still loose and there were no interior panels over the reflectix they'd put up. The fridge is still full of building materials and cans of stuff. It looked rough, but it was running and they got here! (Erica had been posting on Facebook from every stop along the way. I guess she was nervous and wanted to leave a trail!)

Then, on Saturday night...

They put a lot of the loose parts in the back room, closed the door, hung hefty bags on the windows with tape for curtains and inflated an air mattress on the floor of the main cabin. It filled the space wall-to-wall but they did it... They spent the first night in their GMC!

Throughout the weekend they were continuing to fix it up. When friends came to enjoy the airshow with them, they were handed tools to give a hand in between the acts. By the middle of Sunday it was looking very good. The panels are up, things are in place, but most of all, they're now using the coach instead of just fixing it.

You can tell just by looking how excited they are after all of that hard work. It's a thrill just to have them around. This is what it's all about.

I've strongly believed that having a few low-to-no cost rallies is a great way to meet new people. The TI events have typically brought at least a few new faces to the group each year. I enjoy the clubs and the club rallies, but there's also a lot to be said for simple get-togethers, which I hope to plan more of.

Sounds like that couple who made the TV show "Found in America" a few years ago. I missed it while it was running on TV.

I wish would ditch some of the garbage that's on TV now and play stuff like that again!

I just uploaded some pictures from my phone. I cropped them and tried to get fancy, but Ansel Adams is clearly dead.

I'm rather shy about taking pictures of people, and this is regrettable. We have so many friendly faces that ought to be shared. Still, pictures of coaches are fun to see too.

Don't sell yourself short, Larry. Those photos are great! Thank you for sharing them. I wish we could have been there. Hopefully this get-together will continue for a few more years and we will be able to make it to one. Three cheers for Desmond!!!

A drive up from Arizona would be a great cruise. As for the pictures, it's hard to get a bad snapshot with GMC's and San Francisco in the same frame.

One of these days we'll have to organize a photo shoot of a parade of GMC's going across the Golden Gate Bridge. There are some great vantage points on Yerba Buena Island where we could snap a parade of coaches going over the Bay Bridge.

Sounds like a great idea for a photo op. The timing of this event might work out well with our usual vacation schedule. Since we both work full time (and will for the foreseeable future) it is sometimes hard to make it to anything that is much more than a two day drive away from home. It's hard to get enough time off, all at one time.

Thanks for the write up Gene! Seems like you got all the salient points right so nothing to correct.

We had a blast at the TI rally. Our trip was actually planned around making sure we would be back in time for Fleet Week this year. Desmond and Laura did such a great job and everyone together is what makes these things so great.

Everyone always seems surprised but happy about our age, and i guess it is not exactly the norm yet, but we saw more and more people around our age with RV's on our trip and all of them looked longingly at the GMC and complained that they got worse gas milage or had expensive problems. Everyone else we came across talked passionately about how much they would love to travel in an RV. Hopefully other people in our age group will see how much fun we are all having and jump on board.

And I can't say enough about how great it is jumping into this with a friend. Having Corey and Erica along for a similar ride meant that we could learn from each others mistakes and help each other out. And of course the same goes for the community at large and here on the GMCnet.

Last year the TI rally was a major kick in the butt for us to get our coach on the road. It was our first trip since we did the work on it and i don't think we would have been ready to go if it hadn't been for Fleet Week. This year the same thing happened for Corey and Erica. It is such a great morale booster too to share what you have been working on with other people that appreciate it. Here's to whoever gets kicked into gear by next years fleet week rally.

Just wanted to thank everyone for such a warm welcome into the GMC fold.

This was actually my third rally, but the first that the coach was able to make it to. We've always been heartily welcomed, but it felt so much better having my coach there this time! We have a ways to go before "Lucky" is ready for real use, but such a treat to be able to make this milestone and be able to line up with the rest of you! Now that we've had it on the road, and spent a night on the floor, I officially feel like part of the gang!

We've had the coach for 2+ years and we couldn't have had a better maiden voyage. We are both still beaming from our weekend of fun, and excited to get out on the road again. Our coach is just starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel in regards to our renovation, and it will be great to get the remaining stuff sorted. There is much still to do, but amazing what an energizing weekend this was. Can't wait to tackle the next project on my to-do list.

For us the weekend was a resounding success. From Oakland, it's a short trip to get to the island, but as it was our very first, we may as well have been going to the moon. We were both nervous and excited to be out on the road. Once we got to the island we felt right at home. it was great to be able to park on the lawn and was able to talk my grandfather into coming out on Sunday. A real treat for me, as I cut my teeth on his garage floor with him watching over my shoulder. It's nice to be able to show off what I've learned from him with a project like this. He met many of you and had a fabulous day.
All in all, the coach ran great, and left in better shape than it arrived. We couldn't ask for more... except maybe a proper bed:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/cjonesgo/6236567743/in/set-72157619270100056/

Here is a link to my (very neglected) flickr stream of our coach. Gives a taste of what it looked like when we got it, and some of the steps along the way. I'll try to update is soon with some more current pics:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/cjonesgo/sets/72157619270100056/

We'll keep you all posted on our progress, and hope to see everyone out on the road.

A special thanks to Desmond and his family for all the hard work that went into this weekend.

Paul & Alana,

I'm not too much for travelogues, but yours is an exception: I really
enjoyed viewing the whole thing last night. Most of the scenes were
variations of ones we've enjoyed over the years in our GMC.

Congratulations on a great restoration, a life-long memory acquisition, and
a nice presentation.

Corey & Erica,

Thanks for the photos of your coach. With Paul and Alana's example to
follow, I'm sure you'll do a really great job on the restoration. One bit
of advice from an older owner: Don't cut corners on your work. When I did
ours in '98 & '99, my intention was to sell the coach when we reached
Alaska, or certainly upon our return (we already had a year-old 40' diesel
pusher). With that in mind, I did cut some corners, such as not fitting
things quite as well as I'm capable of, using on-hand material rather than
buying "good stuff", installing average rather than premium quality
products, etc. The results aren't bad, but certainly not up to what we'd
have preferred to live with for the past 13 years after being inducted into
the cult and giving up the 40'er to keep the 23'.

Do it right and enjoy it "forever". :-)

Paul and Alana, Bob and I met you at the KOA across from Ft. Stevens State
Park, OR, this past July. Glad to hear y'all made it to the TI meet. We
would have been there if we could have worked it into our schedule. Good to
hear your friends finally caught up with you. We look forward to seeing you
somewhere else on down the road.

Lookin' good, Corey and Erica! It's amazing what a nice new shiny set of wheels can do for the appearance of any vehicle, isn't it? Keep up the good work and use it as often as you can.

Yup, wheels make a BIG difference. Also, I've been doing a lot of subtle exterior restoration. Almost everything that is black on the outside has been touched up at this point. I still have the side cockpit windows to remove/repaint, but other than that, all the trim work has been refreshed, and much of the suspension has been repainted.

Painting the inside of the rear fender wells black made a remarkable difference in appearance. Some new stripes and a LOT of polishing and I won't feel like such an eyesore!

Thanks again to everyone for being such great cheer-leaders in this process.
