I've replace the thermostat in the 403 at least a dozen times in the last four years .I like to use a 190 stat and my temp guage runs about midway when the thng is working but they stick open usually in less than 1000 mi. Have tried Auto Zone- NAPA - Advance and GM but all do the same thing . Cold weather is comin and I 'll need some heat !

Thermostat and Cold Weather coming reminds me of a story About " Being
Connected to the Source"
A trapper from the far north came down to visit us a few weeks ago. We took
him for a ride in our coach. As evening came you could feel the chill due
to the cool damp outside. I went over to the thermostat and moved the
dial. Almost instantly the fan started to blow and very soon hot air warmed
the coach. This guy got so excited he wanted to know where he could get the
gadget on the wall (thermostat). I told him Home Depot. He did pick up a
thermostat and headed back up to his Log Cabin in the far north. When he
got home he gathered his family in the living room and showed them the
thermostat he had just nailed on the wall. 'Watch this" he says as he moves
the dial.
Moral of the story - is you have to be connected to the Source!
We are off to Harrison Hot Springs for a weekend in our Kingsley to
Celebrate my wife's Birthday.
Her choice to stay in the coach rather than the Hot Springs Hotel. We walk
over and have Dinner and dance in the Copper Room then back to the coach to
smooch!

I'd take a look at the block casting and the outlet casting and see if maybe one or the other isn't warped or misshapen such that when you torque down on the casting, the 'stat gets warped. If I put two in in four years in anything, I'd go looking for the failure mode.

Another West Coast story. Woodcutter, exhausted after using a human powered
crosscut saw, was told by a friend that he needed a chain saw. Convinced
that he should, the woodcutter bought a chain saw. Several days pass, and
the woodcutter brings the saw back to where he bought it, and complained
that he was unable to even match his output with the crosscut. The shop
operator fueled the saw, yanked the starter rope, and the saw roared to
life. "What's that sound? queried the woodcutter. (Insert what
