Everyone in the GMC community is saddened by this loss and relieved that no one was injured. We and our GMC motorhomes are all connected and feel the pain when one suffers.
However, the loss brings to mind some other thoughts about prevention and insurance. Jim Bounds and Jim Kanomata sell fire extinguishers and Bounds in particular, is adamant about having them mounted in the appropriate places in the GMC, namely the engine and generator compartments. The photo on his web site was enough to convince me.
I bought one for the engine compartment in Amana-now I am wondering how to check it four years later? I have been running without the wheel wells-just have not re-installed them. Now it seems like that is a good idea for access to any fire in that area as I also carry a large hand held extinguisher. I do not have one next to the generator, however, and the PO installed locks on the generator door which now seems like a bad idea!!!!
I had my Datsun 240-Z insured for an "agreed amount" but had to use a different company than USAA which at the time did not offer this coverage. I will check with them now as I think most companies will not pay us the value of the coach in the event of a loss.
Jerry, I am very sorry for your loss and, like the others, hope you will remain in the GMC community. It is sad enough that we cannot get loans on these coaches due to their age, now we must also concern ourselves with adequate insurance. In view of this tragedy, now would be a good time to do that.....Michael at GEMRECS
