I have some very sad news to share. While traveling back from Santa Barbara last week our GMC had an engine fire and was completely destroyed. There were no indications that anything was wrong. It ran perfectly the whole time we traveled and I always made every effort to make sure that it was running tops and was well maintained, especially because I almost always travel in it with the wife and kids. Thank God it happened without our kids, and after we had stopped for dinner and were off the freeway.
Our GMC was like a member of the family, and will be sorely missed. I had always admired them as a kid, and my wife being a little eccentric herself, agreed to let me buy it, in the hopes that it would give us more opportunities to get away on short notice and spend quality time together as a family. A short time after I brought her home my girls had given our GMC a name. They named him ’Ricky’. I asked them, ‘Why did you name him Ricky?” They explained that it was short for ‘Rickety’. LOL! It wasn’t meant to be a put down, but a term of endearment by them, and a clever play on words!
It saddens me to think that I have to share my TZE number with Dave for the purposes of taking it off the registry. Everyone here in the GMC community, especially the Jim’s on East and West coasts were a huge help to me in the 7 years we owned it. At this point we’re not sure if another GMC or even RV ownership is in our future. For me, the GMC was a dream come true that provided countless memories that my family will treasure. Thank you everyone for the help and advice you provided on this forum. As many have shared, you are all second to none and were a huge factor in my decision to start this journey in the first place.

Jerry,
I am sorry to hear that your GMC was destroyed, I am compiling reports of GMC fires and what caused them. If you can provide
additional details as to what caused the fire, where it started, etc. I would appreciate it. Perhaps we can glean some bit of
information that will help prevent it happening again.
Waxing philosophical; while the GMC was well "loved" it is sad that it was destroyed, however, at the end of the day the GMC is just
an inanimate "object." Obviously it is far more important that neither you nor any of your family members were injured.
Regards,
Rob M.

Jerry,
This is very sad news indeed. If Rickey gave you half the pleasure that our old Palm Beach has given us, then you were very lucky. And lucky too that nobody was hurt. I'm sure all of us (selfishly) want to know how that fire started so that we can prevent it for our baby's. I am curious if it was fuel, electrical, or transmission fluid.
As others have said, nothing will replace the fun you had with Rickey, but the fun isn't over yet. Rickey's DNA is still available for y'all to enjoy, if you choose to buy another coach. It sounds like your luck extends to your partner who, "being a little eccentric herself" married you!
Hang tough. The fun memories linger much longer than the loss. Please let us know if you find the cause of the fire.
Best wishes to you and your family,

Jerry,
Very sorry to hear of the loss of your coach -- but very happy no one was injured.

I realize how emotional many of us get about our old GMCs. Once it is
gone, it's gone forever. No more great experiences, no more wonderful
family memories, no more family bonding stories will emanate from
TZE168V100167. So sorry to hear the GMC was lost but grateful that
ya'll escaped without harm.
But as been said, when one door closes, another opens. A dear old
friend of nearly 20 years, Jack Mohrbeck passed away last week from a
melanoma that got away. His beautiful '77 Royale will be coming on the
market as soon as Marlene has found time to think about it. Jack had
made too many upgrades to cover here but if someone made it for a GMC,
Jack installed it.
The coach hasn't been driven much the past 2 years but Jack still
managed to keep it shining. This might be the door that opens for
someone. Stay tuned.
Jerry, I sent your info to John Shotwell who now runs the Registry and
he will update the records. BTW, a lost coach is never expunged from
the Record. TZE168V100167 will be carried forth.
For any of you who haven't checked with John to see if your coach is
listed pls contact him at registermygmc@gmail.com He is pretty close
to the 8,200 mark now and only needs 4,000 more TZEs so he can think
about retiring.

Thanks everyone for your kind words posted hereand sent by PM. My wife and I are truly thankful to our God, and as you all have said so well, imaterial things can be replaced, very easily. It was a very scary experience as Dan said, and I do not take for granted the life that I have been given, reminding me what is precious and important.
If I do ever find out what the cause of the fire was I will definitely let you all know.

Jerry has posted some pictures in his album :
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5914
This looks like the same coach that passed me on highway 101 just south of Ventura Sunday afternoon. Was that you Jerry? I was in the '77 Kingsley coming back from a weekend in Pismo.
I am so sorry for the loss of your wonderful coach. Take heart that this has motivated me to buy one of the fire supression systems for my coach. Such a loss is devastating.

So sorry to hear of your dream come true now gone. Many if not all of us had the same thoughts when we first saw the GMC MH on the road. Some of us were too young to be able to own one then but as life moved on, we were able to get one with smiles on our faces.
Losing such a thing is like losing a favorite item that we vow never to part with, Just think of the wonderful times and friends you have made.
In retrospect, now you have knowledge of the GMC, what you like, what you don't and what you'd change. Other than the familiarity of what you had the loss has now opened the door that otherwise would never be considered.
There are many GMCs out there, in various stages of remodel from OEM to deluxe rebuilds. And don't forget the transmode if you are up to remodeling one to your own tastes. JimB did a nice job on His transmode and his hideaway storage is a great idea, the layout is very open and worth consideration.
If you love the travel in a GMC, perhaps another is in your future. If life changes direction for you, then God speed.
If you never made it to a ralley, be sure to show up from time to time to say hello to we who make up the GMC net.
Again, sad news for sure about Ricky, hope there may be a next.
Keep smiling, you are all safe.
