I'm working on another project, a 1981 Vanagon Westfalia, but it got me thinking about Robin's Barn Queen. What do you do to clean out long evaporated gasoline sediment from a fuel tank? This "old" westy had been sleeping for 21 yearsand any gasoline has long since vaporized. I expect to see the vent lines completely crystalized, just as Arch did so long ago. What do you expect Robin will find?

I'm guessing that he'll drop both tanks, clean or boil them, replace all soft lines, and use something like Poly-Armour for the hard lines. New fuel pump and carburator will take care of the fuel issues. The electrical side should be much easier.

Larry,

Just fill it up with ethanol that should do the trick! ;-)

The DEVIL made me say that!

Larry,

Remember: Only ONE tank (or less -- perhaps less than a gallon) of gas
evaporated out during those 21 years. So by far the majority of the
"residue" is from the active life of the VW. That's probably not much, and
our modern "fuel" should scour that out pretty quickly. A good filter's
probably warranted, for the accumulated rust as much as anything else.

JMHO,

Ken H.

Larry, I am thinking like Ken on this one. Replace the fuel lines and put a good filter in line. Drain what is in there, fill it back up, and go with it.

Well, I bought a gallon of lacquer thinner and a gallon of acetone . I'm going to slosh them around (separately) an stick a toilet brush in for good measure just to try to get some of that junk out. It's so bad that the outlet and return ports are clogged. At least on the Barn Queen the fuel pick-up is removable. I don't believe there are any socks in this VW tank to worry about.

I think there should be some alcohol involved too ;~)

Sounds like a plan to me. Email me when you get it cleaned up.

Tumble it.  Set up some sort of axle with a crank and affix the tank.  Put five or ten pounds of sharp edged medium gravel in it and rotate it for an hour or so, dump the rocks, and then do the acetonethang.
