Thanks to everyone's advice last week i was able to get it running pretty good.
It runs cool, electric fan does its job, doesn't overheat, idles pretty smoooth.
So tonight i tried to move it- into gear, makes lots of noise, no power, not much movement and it backfires out the carb.
I will time it properly after i get it moved but that will probably involve getting under it to locate and raise the timing mark and it is in mud where it's at.

The timing was still not advanced enough. I had been chasing a smooth idle while the automatic choke was holding the throttle open.
I advanced the timing a bit more and the problem went away.

it has been noted here that sometimes the harmonic balancer can slip on the hub and throw the timing mark off.
