Took the '75 out for a short test drive today and a power steering hose
promptly blew up. It's the one underneath the coach with hard metal
crimped fittings and a rubber hose in between. Doesn't look like
there are any part numbers in the parts interchange for this. Is
it some special custom thing, or ??? Has anybody found a part to fit??
Any help appreciated. The beast is currently parked in a moderately safe
place about a mile away, but I'd really like to get it home asap.

If it happened to me which it has on my GMC and hot rods.
I would do as Dan has suggested . Remove it from the coach and bring it into a hose shop or auto shop that has the equipment to make up new hoses Auto A/C shops should be able to do it also. Call around first.

I'd be very careful about what an A/C shop might make up for PS -- the
pressure is 5+ times as high in the PS and the A/C hose might not be
compatible with PS fluid. Be SURE they use PS SUPPLY Hose NOT Return Hose.
Unless the old hose was in obviously very bad condition, I'd remove and
clean the filter at the windshield wiper before starting the engine again.
Be too bad to blow the new hose too.

Karen, I went through this process a few months ago, except that I wrecked the hose all by myself, without the coach's help.
I ended up having to take the rubber hose AND the steel line to a local hose shop (search for hydraulic hoses) because no one had the proper female fitting for the rubber side. They cut off the male steel line fitting, soldered a new modern one on, and then made me a new rubber hose. It cost about $70 total, and took a day to turn around.
On the plus side, the coach isn't too difficult to steer without power steering. You should be able to get it home.

Andrew,
Just wondering how far you drove your GMC without power steering.
I would assume that if you leave the belt connected all the fluid would be pumped out of the system and leave the pump empty. It is
a vane pump and I don't know if there would be enough residual fluid left in it to keep it from being damaged if the reservoir was
empty.
You could disconnect the belt that wraps around the crank, water pump, and power steering pump but it wouldn't be a good idea to
disconnect the belt that wraps around the crank, water pump, power steering, and alternator.

Karen,
Jim K is here at GMCWS but Nick at applied GMC could assist you. You can
also remove your existing hose, take it to NAPA and they will mount your
existing hose ends on a new hose. Pretty simple procedure and most NAPA
stores have the machine to do this.

We had to bail Jim Kanomata out of the hoosgow this am. (Hee, hee) Jim got
up early to take his run through the rain locker (shower to you landlubbers)
and when he stepped out, there were two ladies standing there. You can
guess the rest! You've just got to wear them all the time once you get
used to them (glasses).

Thanks all, I've learned a lot. Sure wasn't how I was planning to spend Saturday evening!
Fortunately we have a good mechanic in the family we can call for advice in these situations.
Stuff from this lesson:
a) The high pressure side of power steering is very high pressure.
It's not possible to patch. (we didn't try)
b) If you run the PS pump without fluid, you may damage it. We may have been able to
wrestle it home, but didn't want to risk it for a non-emergency situation.
c) On some vehicles you can remove the PS belt to save the pump, but on a GMC,
the belts also go to important things like the water pump and fan. You may
be able to run the water pump on just one belt and have no alternator,
but it's risky.
d) Be very careful removing the old line as you may need to reuse parts from it.
We have to remove brackets at the front of the coach in order to get the line
in/out without bending. Maybe prior mechanics weren't so careful.
In the end, we borrowed the line from our little coach to get the big one home.
Sure is handy having a spare coach available.
The metal tubing that goes into the PS pump flow control valve had too much prior damage to undo.
Maybe that's what contributed to its demise -- the rubber blew apart at the crimp fitting on that end,
possibly due to prior abuse. We had to cut the metal tubing in order to remove it so won't be able
to re-use.
Guess we'll be bothering Nick at Applied on Monday for a new hose, but I'm very happy to
have the coach safely back in it's own yard. I'm also grateful this happened near home
and not out in the middle of nowhere. Or possibly worse, it could have blown at Treasure
Island next week and left a giant mess on all that clean white Navy concrete! The puddles
look like a crime scene.
Would a clogged filter cause higher pressures? We'll change that out too while we're at it.
