It is remarkable that I have found all the peicces of the engine that has been dismantled for close to a year.

Almost all, I seem to have misplaced the transmission dip stick.

I don't recall why i pulled it out.

The GMC trans dipstick goes out to the front right? Mine is Tornado so it just sits on the under the deck.

In any case, I might be a while to find a proper replacement and I need ot move the coach bnow beforethe mud comes.

Apparently I've lost some fluiid. When i put it drive almost nothing happens.

So, can anyone offier an educated guess on how much fluid it should take after I raise it to the level where it engages?

I will drain it and fill it and replace the stick in the coming months, right now I just need to drive it a few hundred feet.

Thanks

Put in a pint at a time and see if it moves. A refill after draining pan is 4 quarts, so it should not take more than 2 quarts to get it to move.

Dave,

Ken B. posted this just 5 days ago; it's directly applicable to your
situation::

Check the calibration on the dipstick.

Start the engine and let it idle for a minute or two to fill up the torque
converter.

Remove the modulator. If fluid flows out the hole you are over filled.

If is is below the hole, add fluid until it comes out of the modulator hole.
When the fluid quits draining out of the hole you are at the full mark.

Go check the dipstick fluid level and mark it at this point so you know
where full is.

Reinstall the modulator and modulator vacuum hose.

Dave,

If the Revcon is sitting on a level surface you can:

1) remove the modulator from the side of the transmission
2) pour fluid into the hole where the dipstick goes into the final drive
3) have someone watch to see when fluid runs out of the modulator hole
4) stop as soon as fluid starts running out of the modulator hole
5) screw the modulator back in
6) plug the hole where the dipstick goes into the final drive
7) start the engine let it run for a minute or so to pump fluid into the torque convertor
8) shut it off and repeat the above procedure quickly

You should have enough fluid to move the Revcon without damaging the transmission.

If you don't feel like doing all this give one of the GMC vendors a call, I'll bet they'll send you a used dipstick cheap.

Rob M.

Doesn't the GMC dip stick have a long tube to the front?

I would not want that. Revcon did not change the Toro stuff so you can check the fluids from inside.

I'll just get one for junkyard and trim it per the calibration instructions.

No Dave. GMC is just like your's, under the hatch. Some have modified them to come out near the engine dipstick.
You have good information here so now you can tell if it has enough fluid or not.
I see why you hang around us now and not the flatnose folks. Very Happy

Dave,

Nope, the long dipstick which is accessible under the driver side front hood for the transmission is an aftermarket item.

The engine oil dipstick in the same location is OEM.

Having both up under the front hood is mo betta! ;-)

Jim K. has new replacement transmission dipsticks. I should not have to post this because Jim K. has almost everything for a GMC. I'm still waiting for him to stock and sell the 30 mpg GMC carb.

1. Remove the modulator.

2. Fill the with fluid until it starts running out of the modulator hole.

3. Start and run the engine to fill the torque converter.

4. Shut off the engine and immediately fill the trans again until the fluid runs out of the modulator hole.

5. Replace the modulator and modulator vacuum hose

6. If you have a new dipstick, check the fluid level and mark the new stick.

7. Drive the coach away.
