Looking for some advise on Laminate flooring installation in the GMC. Did you use any underlayment and what kind. What brand of floor did you use? Anything good or bad about the installation since you"ve done it? Any better ideas?
Thanks for your opinions, I"me tired of the carpet!!

Not in the GMC, but I have installed Pergo in the kitchen about 15 years ago and it still looks great. This was back when it was just tong an groove and you had to glue the joints. Now they have engineered joints that pull themselves together. Still, the glue was waterproof and so the kitchen floor is totally waterproof. Might be something to consider for the GMC.
Would it be a good idea to put Dynamat, or other sound deadening material under the floor?

We installed laminate floor in our GMC last year. We did put the foam
underlayment in first. Not sure of the brand name...it is mid-range
quality, 12mm thickness and the type that "clicks" together without glue.
When we purchased our coach the floor was bare....we choose laminate because
we have teenagers and labrador retrievers and often camp near the beach. We
have laminate in our basement and six years of our boys and their friends, 2
dogs and many sets of snow covered boots it held up very well. Never had a
problem with any water damage...and the kids used the wood stove in rec room
as a place to drop ski boots, skates etc to dry!!
In the coach after two summers....many wet, dirty shoes and paws it does
not show a mark anywhere. The only downside is that it is cold on bare feet
in spring and fall ( wear slippers or put a rug down) and it is a bit hard
to cut around some of the odd shapes in a GMC.

Our coach had laminate in it when we bought it 5 yrs ago it is unmarked and undamaged. I do not know the brand. The PO put it down a few yrs before we bought it. They wintered in it in Florida for the last few yrs. It seems to hold up very well. I put body pads under coach and took up some pieces to get to ths hold down bolts and the floor went back together with no visible damage. Bottom line I am very happy with it.

I was at Lowes today and noticed that the swiftlock brand has what appears to be a waterproof coating on the bottom. You can even buy it with a pad already attached to it. It seems that the price is directly related to the thickness of the backer board material. I read some reviews by folks who have installed the different products and found that the thinner stuff (7mm or less) had trouble with broken interlock seams right out of the box. One product even said it could be used in wet areas like the bath as long as the joints were sealed with silicone. The products seem to be improving with time. Thanks for your input...

I wonder if you were to varnish the bare edges of laminate, let it dry and then assemble it, if that would slow the water damage
I saw a kitchen counter that was made of a laminate floor. The seams were sealed with an outdoor seam sealer. The water has not been able to do any damage, and it really looks great.
When my GMC came home, it had a heavy type carpet. it looked new but was a hastle, sand, dirt, clean up, and don't forget spills from a glass or sauce pan.
I tore it out, repaired some more PO "fixes" and laid a self stick tile that looked like stone. What a difference! Cleanup is so easy you can hardly do it without giggling. Looks terrific and the color blended right in.
I had a choice of laminiate flooring but my coach is made primarily of OAK and the floor would have been overbearing in a wood tone. I had some laminate go bad because of moisture in the house so I decided to stay away from laminate.
Good luck, what ever you do will look great.

Lynn,
I installed Pergo in our GMC several years ago and I'm betting it still
looks new. I carefully removed all staples and anything else sticking up
from the floor then used the recommended 1/4" foam before laying the
flooring. The stuff used was the snap together stuff that I had installed
in my home years before. The first night after installation, the icemaker
connetion leaked and flooded a huge area of the floor with absolutely no
damage after cleanup. The seams fit very tight and do not permit water to
penetrate and cause damage. Less expensive brands are questionable in my
experience. I used a Home Depot off brand in our SOB and the first time the
humidity dropped to less than 10%, the ends started gapping. One of the
issues with laminate flooring is that it is supposed to float. It requires
a 1/4" gap between the edges and the surrounding walls. When you bolt down
the sofa and dining module, you eliminate it's ability to float. The pergo
in the GMC didn't care, always looked very nice. The stuff in our SOB is
great as long as the humidity is above 30%.
Both are a bear to keep clean and streak free, just like most other
flooring surfaces in motorhomes.

Lynn,
You have received a lot of great replies. If you're going to put a
laminate floor down use the best available with a good underlayment.
We used Pergo flooring on the remodel of the coach we sold this
spring. Pergo flooring has been used in Kitchens in homes for years
without water damage so using it in the coach is not a problem. I you
use a cheap laminate you get what you pay for.
It is just so much easier to keep clean and sweep out. The sand in
the carpet that we could not get all out was a good reason.

Not sure how it will hold up but we plan on using the Allure vinyl plank flooring from Home Depot. we just haven't had time to put it down yet. It is a floating floor that self adheres to itself and is water proof. was planning on simply putting a 1/4 wood underlay so that all those little holes (I guess they are body attachment points) will not show through the vinyl.
I know the product claims limits on heat and humidity but I have read of several SOB's using it and we don't plan on heading to AZ anytime soon.

it took longer to pull up that funky shag carpet and pick all the staples out than to replace it with laminate.
Boy, that's the fact. The Vinyl tile I used was self stick-um. I wanted to be able to remove them easily if I had a problem... no problem after 3 years so far.
The carpet went from new when I bought the GMC to crap over time used at the parks. I hated cleaning it and it never looked clean. The carpet staples were everywhere and where the PO pieced the carpet, he used a whole box of staples. He created other issues too but not important here.
No matter which way you go to cover the floor, you will never be happier to be rid of the carpet.

I was in an RV dealer showroom a few months ago, waiting for a tow truck, and was checking out the new Airstream trailers. I have a 1973 25' Tradewind that I used to tow around before I got tired of walking outside to get from the cockpit to the living area.
Anyway, there are a lot of great things about new Airstreams. One that struck me was the flooring. It looked like cork, but was roll vinyl. It looked great and was entirely appropriate for the application. Airstream used to use carpet like the rest of us.
Home Depot doesn't sell the same pattern, but I bet you could get a decent effect with ordinary stuff, or order better stuff elsewhere.
In the absence of modern GMC motorhome production, Airstream is a good source for ideas of high quality modern materials and designs. I was impressed.
Now if I could only find a way to fit one of the Airstream 16" round kitchen sinks into the GMC...!

The PO had put in a false floor, thinking it would keep the coach insulated from the sound and cold. It doesn't. If there ever is a flood, that floor may be the downfall of the coach as it will rot underneath.
There is about an inch of space between the new floor and the old. If I had any say, I would have used that space for venting the hot air in the furnace. It would keep the floor warm as well as heat the coach.
I used a vinyl tile that looked like a medium brownish/grey stone. It enhances the Oak wood walls and cabinets nicely, I think. Of course that is my opinion and everyone has one.
I simply went to the tile when the carpet became such a disaster when it came to cleaning it and the wood grain flooring was just too woody for my tastes. The new tiles are so easy to keep clean it should be illegal... lolololol Get rid of that carpet, you don't know what you are missing.

And if you like the Airstream Mirror finished aluminum, there is a paint that looks like a mirror when applied. You could paint the GMC to look like that. have fun cleaning with Windex every time it rains....
