As the engine was going back together i connected the battery so it would be ready when i was ready.

Then i discovered the key was on, (i unlocked the wheel to push it around the yard) The coil was very hot. Normally it would have just killed the battery but I had run a charging wire off the house converter.

So should I assume the coil is cooked and just buy a new one?

You signature line does not have the year and model of your coach so we do not know what type of ignition you have.

Dave, if the coil was hot, and you had points type ignition, you can assume
that the points and condensor are fried as the points were closed and the
circuit was complete. If the coil was cool. then the points were probably
open, and so was the primary circuit. Take the cap off and look at the
points. If they are burned, they are inexpensive. Just replace them and set
the ignition like the book says.

Take it to AutoZone - they'll check it for free, for making sparks anyway.  If it makes sparks properly and you know someone who has one, HiPot test it (high voltage leakeage test).  If it HiPots OK, use it and no harm done.  If not, or if there's a question, can it and get another.. they're not greatly expensive.

If the coil was hot, I would suspect that would mean the coil was still conducting, and if you had points ignition that the points were closed. If you know how, have a look at the points and if they aren't burned, you may have gotten away with an OOPS.
