The ignition lock on our '75 coach is getting a bit tricky to operate.
Is there a way to pull it without disassembling the steering column?
I've taken apart the column on the '73 and would rather avoid doing that
again if possible.

thanks,
Karen

You have to remove the steering wheel and the turn signal disc thing then you can remove the key switch. No hard to do.

Dave Silva referred me to this page when I had the same problem.

http://www.gmceast.com/technical/Sowers_Steering_Column_Upgrade_Repair.pdf

That and a borrowed tool from Autozone and the job went pretty well.

I ordered a new lock cylinder and keys and had them overnighted from Cinnabar and got them promptly. I had the old lock cylinder out and ready when the new lock arrived the next day.

Not so hard.

We were lucky. We were preparing for a trip and the cylinder froze in the driveway of our house as we were preparing to leave. It could have broken at some stop along the way.

You should be able to buy the lock locally. It's a standard Chev/Gmc item.
Millions in use.

Next time if you are borrowing the tools from AutoZone, buy the lock from them also. It is, or was, an in stock item from them the last time I replaced one.

Thanks, I used that most excellent article to do the '73 ignition lock. I was hoping
for some trick to do it more easily. Guess there aren't a lot of car thieves hanging out
on the GMC forum. :-)

thanks,
