My life appears to be afflicted with Steering Wheel Rot. Both my
Catalina and the Palm Beach having nothing but a wire core where once
there was a nicely textued plastic wheel.

What kind of replacment steering wheels are recommended for the GMC?
The Barn Queen will be moving soon...

Robin,

Tom Hampton at Grandview replaced my steering wheel with an inexpensive one that looks a lot like these at Jim K's place.

<http://appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/865>

I think it was about $50. Tom's number is (937) 644-4238

With my last coach I went to the junk yard and picked up a really nice leather wrapped wheel out of a GMC minivan. Can't remember the year. The horn button is logl'd GMC so it was perfect.

Bob et al,

I put one of the pictured steering wheels on Double Trouble only to find that it blocked vision of the gages so I removed it.

I found that for gauge visibility, the four spoke wheel was better than the later OEM, but worse than the early OEM. (But I like the looks of the four spoke.) The style with a single spoke running across just under the center, seems the best for gauge visibility. I pick them up at the pick-n-pull when I can get one with a tight cover and a GMC horn button. (I mix and match.)

I did see and interesting Firebird wheel very much like the single spoke with the screaming chicken horn button... might be good for a theme coach.

Bone yard Chevy 1990 S-10 or preferably GMC S-15 because the center button says GMC on it. You can also a get the Chevy wheel and get a GMC horn button from a GM dealer for about $10.00.

Interestingly - my 23' Transmode has a GMC truck wheel, a la pickup.  My 26' Palm Beach has an Oldsmobile wheel, a la cutlass, etc.  Both '76 models, and it looks like both are the factory wheel.

Transmodes often recieved the "older" equipment. For several years (75/76) they still had the same wheel as the 73/74 models. (Seats and other fixtures had simalar results.) But it wasn't all bad, that wheel did not block the gauges nearly as bad as the later "upgraded" wheel and even '78 transmodes had a boost switch that you did not have to hold. (It is up to you to decide if that was good or bad.)

(I am at work.... No spell checker on this computer...)
