G'day,

I just got the copy of Machinist's Workshop with the Penetrating Oil Test in it. I've scanned it and posted it to the Photo Site:

The test I read was using nuts and bolts exposed in an environmental chamber. That test was not as scientific as the one you posted however the results were the same.

I have been using the ATF/acetone mix for about 2 years now and also depleting my remaining Kroil stockpile. The ATF/acetone works at least as well as the Kroil in my experience. The Kroil seems to work a bit faster but both still are, at least, an overnight type of thing.

The best method is to Kroil (or ATF/acetone) early and often. BTW, ATF alone does not give as good of a result as the 50/50 mix or Kroil. My theory, the acetone creeps in, and then as it evaporates out it sucks the ATF in.

Steve,

Do you remember where you read the test of which you speak? I was a bit disappointed with the test as it wasn't on nuts and bolts.

I have never mixed the two yet, if they do mix I would think the acetone reduces what I would call the viscosity and allows it to
penetrate spots where the "thicker" ATF can't. The acetone evaporates and leaves the ATF behind to lubricate.

Dri-Slide cable lube is Moly-Disulfide suspended in acetone (I think) which works the same way.

I believe the original bit I read said the ATF & acetone do not mix and the container must be shaken well before use. I read it on one of my machine shop forums and that was a reference to a different website. If you really want to read it I'll see if I can find it. It did have the same results as your article.

Been using Dri-Slide Bike Aid for over 20 years. Great stuff. I thought it was moly in alcohol. However the MSDS

https://www.russack.com/msds/MSDS%20on%20D-S%20Bike-Aid.pdf?PHPSESSID=4d9aa0ea8ed4bdc68239262c390b7d83

says it is graphite dissolved in Stoddard Solvent with a touch of benzene and xylene. At the price they charge for it I would have expected moly not graphite. I'll have to look at mixing some of my own with graphite and also make some up with Moly and try that. The best part of dri-slide is the needle tipped bottle.

I looked for the reference I had originally seen and it was a comment on the article you posted. The force values posted are the exact same values from your posted item. The one I originally read referred to them as torque values but they are not torques but push out forces.

Also note that the ATF reference in the article is an error. The oil used was power steering fluid as is shown in the picture with the article. This was covered in some later links, which no longer function. I use ATF as it is easier to get, smells better, has (I think) more detergent and is cheaper.

Steve,
Actually it is ATF and Acetone and NOT Power Steering fluid. I did
the mixing test awhile back between ATF and PS Fluid with acetone and
the PS fluid does not stay MIXED at all with PS fluid. See: <http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5305

Jon,

Thanks for posting your pictures, it is apparent that the miscibility of the ATF and Acetone while not as bad as the power steering
fluid and acetone it is still pretty miserable! Or as southerner's would say missable! VBG>

Sorry, I just COULDN'T resist!
