I'm beat after 2 days of "supervising" my friends from Preferred Glass. They did 13 in two days and I had exactly 13 more from people who asked to get in on the deal after we shut it off. We had several people take some of the removed ones that were not broken. What they wanted with removed fogged windshields I'm not sure but it saved us from having to haul them to the dumpster.
The first day these guys put in 11 hours non stop. It took just under 1.5 hours per windshield which matched their estimate. They have done dozens of these in the past years for GMCers and when we set this up 1.5 hours was the owner's estimate. I thought he was being too conservative with his estimate, but he was correct. I did not factor in all of the time for the extra sealing and clean up that they do. Also I did not factor the extra time involved when doing them outside of their shop where they normal do GMC installations.
Oh well, that takes care of that and now I can enjoy the rest of the Convention bugging, Dan, Jim K, and others.
Maybe we will do it again next year at Amana Colonies. The logistics will be worse since we are not near a glass warehouse there.

I trust the glass guys were treated royally for working that hard!
As far as people grabbing the fogged windshields I hear ABC is starting a new program "GMC Hoarders." ;-)
I wish I was there to join the list of bugee's!

Ken: great service you did for everyone there, congratulations.
I am amazed that they had 13 windshields available. With all the thousands of different windshields made over the years there must be some trick to stocking them for availability. Any ideas how they do it?
Bug Dan especially. Watch out for Teri, she can bug back. Ask her for a breadmaker, and see what she says.

Actually they are readily available. They are made in Minnesota. The local warehouse had 14 in stock when I told them what we were doing they raised that to Quantity 20. We reserved the original 14 for the rally.

I do not know for sure if we will do Amana Colonies or not. The problem in Amana Colonies is one of transportation. The manufacturer is 250 miles away and the closest warehouse is 300 miles away. It costs a bundle to ship these things. I normally pick these up in my Blazer when a GMCer wants them installed at the Preferred Glass shop. The most I have ever transported in one trip was 5. Ken (the owner) has asked me not to transport more than 3 at a time in my Blazer in the future.
Here we were only 15 miles from one of the 4 US warehouses and they delivered them for free. The warehouse has a special truck that they use to deliver them to the local Glass shops and to the Elkhart RV industry, but trying to get them to go 300 miles one way might be difficult. We will work on it over the next year. After talking to the manufacturer and a ham radio friend whose job is to deliver glass every night for a different company out of Chicago, I have some ideas how we might get this done.
We have a year to figure this out for Amana Colonies.

Ken from Preferred Glass called me this morning and because of his over all volume on these when combined with his normal glass business it looks like they will cut him a special deal on dropping these off at Amana Colonies next year. So that is one logistical problem out of the way.
Any way, if we can pull it off with GMCMI and the fairground there, we should be able to do this again next year.
He says he will bring additional employees and shoot for about 20 installs if we do it.
He is working with the manufacturer on a special run with a slightly improved windshield. (I can not announce it yet.) We are not sure about this one but if they agrees I'll announce it here.
I thought these windshields were large. He was installing a 7 by 4 foot single glass in a Freightliner this morning. It is glued in place and is structurally part of the cab.

I suspect if there is any chance of getting a pair of Windscreens back to
Australia on his return flight, Rob will be trying it and I will be right
behind him.
I knew a guy once who was extremely friendly with a airline pilot and he was
able to get a complete XKE hood (bonnet) over to Australia from New Zealand
free of charge. I imagine those days are gone.

Fogged pieces are useful test articles for those of us who are just learning how to install them at home.

This is not a done deal yet and we have a year to get it in place. So far every one I have talked to about this is in favor of it. There are still a few inhibitors to work through.

Ken, I bet you originally thought about saying "normal people" would not attempt it themselves, ha ha!
Thank you for putting the GMCMI windshield project together; we learned a lot.
We're ordering our glass-installation tools today - those suction cups are quite expensive but, after seeing them in use this weekend, they are the only way to go.

Thanks Rob.
We already have a set of those. After watching 13 windshields being installed at GMCMI we determined that the HF cups are wholly unsuitable for manipulating the glass during a GMC install.
Lifting the glass is not really the issue; the problem arises when trying to seat it in the rubber molding - this process takes tremendous and repeated side-side/up-down forces that the HF tools are not up to. I was amazed at how much force the installers at GMCMI had to exert!
We'll be using Aegis Glass Handlers - they are the type that has an integral vacuum pump. They are expensive, unfortunately, but given the cost of GMC windshields we think it they are worth it.

Thanks! The two windscreens (when windshields enter Australia they speak Strine!) in The Blue Streak are fogged, I know one of
Mark's are cracked, and Peter has already mentioned he's up for a couple of new ones too!
I am signed up to have the ones in Double Trouble changed at the Amana Colonies (if it works out) and I can assure you I will be
watching carefully to how it is done so I can repeat the process in case I can't find a shop that will install windscreens I supply.

Rob, your statement is pretty much the reason why we want to learn how to do it ourselves.

As well as the HTS923 hook-and-pick set. There's a substantial amount of "picking" involved in getting the rubber in place over the glass.

I need to go measure the strip in order to see which is best. We have tried the red-handled bead tool from HF and it didn't work so well. Another lesson learned from watching the pros at Goshen: Installation of the locking bead is not a trivial matter; the correct tool makes all the difference in the world.
