Keith,

I think you're right, I got the same combo off eBay for $200.00.

The tranny went to Manny for a rebuild. Jim K brought it to Goshen for me and I'm working on getting it down to Houston.

John Sharpe opened up the final drive, removed the pinion gear under instructions from John Biwersi and found it was in fine shape
except for one of the drive flange seals which was hard as a rock so we changed it. It got installed down at the COOP last year and
did about 2500 miles. So far so good.

Regards,
Rob M.

Looking at the pic, its from a toronado (66/67)
If it was from a 67 eldorado, the case would need to be replaced. The
bottom two holes on the bellhousing don't line-up.
Some can be redrilled but most it interferes with the wall thickness,
sometimes a socket head bolt could be used.
I have a few for the time when I have no choice.

I just had my transmission rebuilt. Can I use the 3.21 final drive? If so what should I pay?

Thanks

Bob,
There would be no real advantage to using a 3.21 final drive by itself
unless you have a 500 Cad motor with a lot of torque or are using a
3.50 chain drive in the transmission and the 3.21 final would give you
a 3.66 final drive ratio. (That is what I have).

Bob,

I installed a 3.21 to 1 final drive (FD) in Double Trouble; however, I found going from 3.07 to 1 to 3.21 to 1 didn't make a big
difference.

I have heard "people" say:

1) they are a lot beefier than the standard GMC FD
2) they are bullet proof
3) they act a bit like a limited slip differential

If you install one with a Power Drive from Manny you wind up with a 3.6? to 1 ratio which does make a difference.

At the Santa Rosa Convention a guy sold one for $250 at the swap meet. I paid $200 for the switch pitch trans and final drive on
eBay. There was no way I'd put it in my GMC WITHOUT having it rebuilt by Manny.

Regards,
Rob M.

> unless you have a 500 Cad motor with a lot of torque

and that does not even matter-- the 455 and the 500 have the same
torque and hp ;<)

--------------------------------------------------------------
Dyno tests
----------------------------------------------------------
I was digging through some old GM test data and thought I would share
the following:

Olds 455 test data with an uncertain pedigree (Toro or not? Test
conditions?) and it showed a torque at 2800 and below of about 398.
No data below 2000, but other tests implied a peak torque at 1200 to
1600 rpm. Peak hp was 234 at 3600.

Cadillac 500 EFI - peak torque 395 at 1200 and 1600 rpm. Peak hp 225
at 3600. The engine was knock limited and spark was retarded about 10
degrees from MBT at most rpms. Both of these are consistent with
other big GM engines built at the time(except for the knock-limited
part). Max torque was always below 2000 rpm and peak hp was never
above 4000. That's not counting performance engines like the Chevy
427 or the Chrysler Hemi, of course.

Olds 350 EFI (Cadillac Seville) - peak torque 290 at 1200, peak power
190 at 4400 and still rising. Not knock limited.

If the Cad 500 were tested on today's fuels would it be knock-limited?
Don't know.

.
.
.
Hopefully this data will be useful to somebody. GaryC

Gene,
Real life sometime trumps facts. I have a friend that has run both
the 455 and CAD 500 in the same coach. He reports that the CAD pulls
much harder than the previous 455 that was in the coach.

I have the 3:21 and the 3:50 Chain. Pulls like hell. Can lay rubber across an intersection too, both tires. It really hooks up when the wheels are turned.

I shoulda kept the Switch Pitch I got it off of. Everyone here talked me out of it.
