Found a nice Cutlass supreme convertible here, but it's a 3.1, not a DOHC 3.4. Anyone here had one of these cars and were you happy with it? I need a nice "spare" car, and at the price, If it's a piece of crap, I can always sell it. It has 130K on it, and If I recall, that is about the life expectancy of the GM 60* V6's.

Weren't the 3.1's famous for head gasket problems?

Between me and my neighbor, we've owned a fair number of GM V6/60's. (2 Fieros, X11 Citation, S10 Blazer, S15 Jimmy). As best as I can recall, they didn't have a lot of head gasket problems, but certain years (and I don't recall which) had a fair number of intake manifold gasket leaks (there was an extended warranty as a "special policy" on them for certain years because of it. It could result in coolant in the oil, and if left unattended, serious problems.

But, my neighbor spent many years at GM powertrain, and they used V6/60's to run some of their auto trans tests, because of their general longevity.

I never see them in junkyards here, but in following the V6/60 websites

<http://www.60degreev6.com/>

is a pretty good one, apparently 3500 engines are pretty cheap in the wrecking yards in the $300 range. For various reasons, the '04 and maybe '05 m.y. Malibu ones without variable valve timing are preferred by swappers. It's mostly a bolt in, with some differences in cooling lines, exhaust, and lots of differences with engine computers. But, it's 200 hp, and 220 torque, with a lot less complexity and "shoehorning" than the DOHC engine. The old DOHC's weren't famous for their reliability, mostly due to oil and coolant leaks, and parts are starting to be hard to get for them.

So, to make a long story short, if you don't mind taking on a future project, sound like you could get a pretty cool, and quick car for cheap.

I had a 1981 X-11 Citation and it was a decent car.
Still running great at 150,000 miles when destroyed
by a tornado in 1999. It was built just three miles
from my house, I believe here in Oklahoma City.

AND, my brother is a Waterford home owner!

Thanks guys, the owner dropped the price even more, I haven't even been by to look at it yet. so either it is a turd and nobody wants it or nobody wants it just because of what it is.
