The outgoing hose from the hot water heater has a regular hose type
connection and the hose is a black hard plastic. I can get the hose jammed
up as far
as it will go onto the fitting and works fine for a while but as it gets
hotter, it begins to leak.
I have tried several types of clamps but cannot get it to stop leaking.
Any suggestions? I am wondering if I am going to change out the entire hot
water hose to something different.
I have been trying to get it to stop for as long as I have had the unit and
I can tell it leaked before I got it.

Ray,
There is a whole lot of ambiguity in you question, but let's try to get the terminology straight.
Out-going connection? Do you mean the engine connection or the one that delivers hot water to the taps?
If by "regular hose type connection" you mean a barb, and by "hard black plastic" you are indicating that it has virtually zero compliance, then there are lots of wiggle room.
In any case with few exceptions, no "hose" should be all that hard, and this may indicate that what is there has aged out.
If this is the engine connection to the water heater, buy a 50' box of hose and replace both runs all the way to the engine. You will lose some coolant when you do this, but with careful clamping and cutting it can be kept from making too big a mess.
If it is the service connection, and someone put PE pipe in there, you will never get it to stop leaking without REALLY expensive constant tension hose clamps. Even that may not work. PE pipe is not for hot water service.
I like Emery's idea, post some pictures, when we know what is the real situation is, we can probably provide better advice.

I have just posted a response to Rlucas suggesting that he go to Home Depot and but a fitting that will go into the tank and get the gray plastic nut that fits it.
They are made by QEst.
That should fix his problem.
