I am on travel and have not followed all of the thread on what to do to rebuild cabinets in a Royale so will start a new one. As I recall the person posting questioned why the solid wood panels were not glued together. In rail, stile and panel construction like that used for the doors in a Royale, the horizontal members (rails) are held to the vertical members (stiles) by a tongue and groove joint which normally is glued together. In production it is common to pin or staple the back side to reduce the time the part has to be left in the clamps. Since solid wood expands and contracts with normal seasonal changes in humidity, the panel is left to float in the groove. Never glue the panel in place or the assembly will bust itself apart the first time the humidity changes significantly. On my Royale the rail, stile and panel doors are properly made. The mortise and tenon joints that hold the face frames together are not. The glue was hastily applied and did not fully coat
the inside of the mortises allowing the tenons to pull loose under load. That is ease to fix by applying glue and clamping the joint back together.

Jerry,
My hanging cabinet came crashing down two days ago. I found the front was intact and glued. BUT the rest of the assembly was all staples. No glue on any parts. After inspecting the other side hanging cabinet I found that it also is starting to have loose joints in the back where it attaches to the frame.
You are saying that I should NOT use glue to reassemble the cabinet to make it a solid unit? I just do not trust staples at this point.

I believe that Jerry was referring only to the construction of the doors and
drawer fronts, not the face frames or the sides and/or backs of the
cabinets. They should be both glued and screwed but the door fronts should
not be glued. They will expand and contract with the changes in humidity,
will shrink and bow if they are glued securely. Small short nails through
the stiles and rails are all that should be required.

Jerry,

The cabinets and fronts in a Coachmen are totally different from the
standard GMC or that used by some of the other upfitters.

By the way, I only had one joint loose in our Royale. A little Elmer's
wood glue did the trick.
