It seems the rebuilt CV joint situation is not yet as bad as I feared.
On Monday I ordered two 76 Olds CV axles from O'Reilly's and 5 from Advance
Auto, in each case after having shown the managers photos of OEM and non-OEM
CV joints and advised them that I'd accept only the former. They are both
enthusiastic co-conspirators in my scheme to stockpile CV joint. :-)
On Tuesday, the two axles arrived at O'Reilly's; one of them was correct. I
took that one home and installed it; the other is I know not where, but they
ordered two more. This morning, I returned the core and collected the
second two axles which, believe it or not, were BOTH correct. I've swapped
a set of old CV joints onto the short axle, stored the rebuilt ones, and
will claim my $30 core charge tomorrow. With no more old joints, I'll have
to eat the core charge on the other. That's 3 for 4 for O'Reilly's!
Today I picked up the one good axle of the two that arrived at Advance Auto.
The other 3 are still pending. I'll have to eat the core charge on any
that are good there, but they only charge $19. :-)
With 3 spares on hand and expectations of up to 3 more arriving, I'm in a
position to offer help to anyone who needs CV joints. Anyone who's
desparate, and attending Goshen or Milan, get in touch with me.
While the 1T front end upgrade will free up a few OEM CV joints, it's
inevitable that they're going to become scarce. I'm sure someone will
eventually manufacture longer axles for us to use with the new CV joints.
In the meantime, I think we should collect at least a few of the surviving
OEM joints. I'm doing my part. :-)

A friend of a friend is in the CV axle rebuilding business herein Montreal. I guess I should arrange to visit their shop to see if they have any Toro/Eldo axles laying about. There is little to no demand for them up here due to most cars having succumbed to rust years ago. That said, if they have any, the price should be low enough to make it worth stocking a few CVJs.

I've got the inners off of a 74? That were torched mid shaft for eng/trans removal by the guy I got a bunch of other stuff from before he tore the hulk up with a track hoe to recycle. The boots and joints appear to be in good shape. I'm in Seattle

No, they're not new -- "rebuilt" OEM. No way I'm gonna pull the balls &
measure them. They're so full of grease it took a whole roll of paper
towles to clean up the mess from just swapping the shaft of the one I
installed in the GMC. It sounded great during the 800 mile trip to Goshen
-- best I could hear thru the sound of the rain for 700 of those miles.
I brought one axle for Albert & one more for whomever wants it. I found the
old spare set after I collected these, so I've got as many spares as Alan &
I need.

Les Burt, in Toronto we hear about someone in Montreal with a very expensive machine to re-machine the grooves on CV joints. Is that your friend ?
I have a friend/aquaintance in London Ontario that can make new shafts. He makes race car gearbox parts. I know he actually makes some of the parts and what he can't make he knows who can.

Dave,
As I haven't been in the back of this guy's shop YET, I don't know what he has for machinery. All I know is he has a decent assortment of CV axles available and also builds custom shafts for engine swaps.
I gained some valuable knowledge about rebuilt CV joints a long while back. Many CVJ inner and outer ball tracks(races) have shallow case hardening. They often can't even be re-machined 1 time and provide a decent service life. If the re-surfacing of the races requires excessive removal of metal, or a CVJ is being rebuilt for a second time, the hardened surface becomes very thin or non existent. This results in a very short lived part due to soft races wearing too fast.
We have no way of knowing exactly how many times a CVJ has been rebuilt, or how much material has been removed during each rebuild. The only way to evaluate this is by measuring the ball diameters and comparing them to what is known to be an original new Factory issued part.
I'd like to know if the GMC/Toro/Eldorado OE CVJs had a decently hardened race and if they hold up well when resurfaced? I have a couple spare used CV axles from both a toro and a GMC motorhome that I would like to have rebuilt at some point.

Les, yes I know about the "case" hardening of the CV parts. I understand the "bad" places do it by hand with a grinder but that someone in Montreal has an expensive, like $500,000 very precision machine!!!!.
