This is a new post of an old thread regarding the availability of a new radiator other than a custom aluminum one. I finally got around to pulling my rad out of my 77 Royale and had Performance Radiator pick it up yesterday. I received a call from a tech there today explaining to me what many on this forum have already stated that the radiator is obsolete. The tech there told me he could re-core mine with the original brass for about $800. After checking my shorts I told him that I could get a custom aluminum one for under $500. He said that the brass ones are far better, and will out last the aluminum ones at least two to one due to corrosion of the aluminum especially in a motorhome that spends large chunks of time sitting. I have seen many posts where ya-all have mentioned your aluminum radiators. Any testimonials about longevity expectations? Is this guys "16 years in the radiator buisiness and i would not put an aluminum radiator in anything I own" remark valid???

??? Where? The Motorhome Enhancements is $800. RayE had his OEM re-cored for, IIRC, approx $500.
I'll be interested in hearing how this turns out as my radiator lower section is a beautiful green with some streaks heading up-wards.

aluminum radiator that we sell are far more capacity than the 500 one.
If you know what a West Coast Radiator is , you know why they named it that.
Few of the smart people got the 500 aluminum ones in and are
scratching their head as to why they are not cooling so well.
Gene Dotson and Jim Buchanan did some research before they went that route.
As long as you take proper precaution to ground them, they will last.

Sir: Jim B http://www.gmccoop.com/ was talking on his daily pose about having a new copper radiator available. Maybe call him.
If you have all steel lines on the transmission cooling lines it is grounded, if you have an extra tranny cooler with rubber lines going to it, it is probably not grounded.

Sully,
Sounds like some one wanting to sell a recore. Aluminum radiators have been around for some time and if you buy any new car it will have an aluminum radiator. If you take proper care of any radiator, it will last. The key things to do are:
1. Do NOT ground the radiator. Grounding will assure a premature failure. Grounding is done properly by keeping the radiator the same potential as the engine, transmission lines do the job.
2. Use only distilled water for diluting concentrated antifreeze or use a prediluted antifreeze.
3. Use a good brand of antifreeze, don't go cheap.
4. Install a screen for the bottom of the radiator. It is exposed to road debris and rocks thrown up by other vehicles. Blaine Merrill makes an excellent one.

Picked my recore up yesterday...$425..one of the few places around here that still does it.. been here forever. Asked how the tanks looked, said great condition, boiled them out should last another 30 some years. Do your research...get a good value...take the doubters at face value. It isn't always necessary to spend a bucket of money to get the job done.
