The regulars here know that I have been chasing steel 16' wheels for a while now.

Dream Cruise day, I acquired four ugly wheels that need at least a blast and prime, one even uglier with damage that I believe I can repair and one that I won't even bother, but I brought it home anyway.

After involved e-mails and phone conversations, I thought I had two more. Mary and I drove ninety miles to find out that they had the wrong hub bore. They were from a '92 C3500 dually, but the hub bore was the larger (4-3/4?) size. Bummer....

I have a perpetually running Craig's list with the wheel specs and pictures, and had asked him to to check it against that. I guess he missed something or just matched the application.

So, not all the Round Shouldered barrel wheels from C3500s are the correct fit.

There may be one down by Findley OH, but I haven't figured out how to get it without spending more for fuel than it is worth.

Back to my Craig's list search.

Matt,
I have seven 16" steel wheels of the correct type that I picked up for my coach. A few of them are in rough shape, but i believe atleast 4 are in VG condition I decided to bite the bullet and purchase 7 eagles from JimK, so I don't need them now. If you have an economical means of getting the wheels from Montreal to you, I'd gladly let you have them. If you are interested, I can provide some photos and dimensions for you.

I'll take whatever Matt doesn't want, if we can find a way to get them to Alabama. Photos and dimensions would be appreciated.

Matt I have 1 more ( besides the spare on the back) steel with Michelin XCH4 on it. I'm trying to get to Goshen for a few nights. Would that help or is 2 the magic nunber? Remarkably clean on the back side, rusty under the wheelcover area but holding all air for sevearl years in the basement.

Les,

I think I have to investigate shipping or driving about 5 hours each way - Tomorrow.

If they came off a coach, I don't think I need to know any more than that.

You have done what I am hoping to do. That is get changed over to 16" and later get some alloy wheels. That is something I could possibly afford.

I'll get back to you real soon.

Thank You,

Matt

I'll try to get an accurate weight to help you guys decide if shipping is worth it. These wheels are heavy!!

By the way, these wheels came from a GMC 3500 cube van. I do not know the exact year but think it was around '80.

John,

Two is what I want for my set, but with this and hoping to get seven from Montreal, there will be a few to spread around.

I know I am not the only one looking for a 16" rim. Our friend Nick Chapeckis is looking for 1 for a spare.

So, If you bring it to Goshen, I will throw it in the mix, and assuming (you know what they say) I can figure out how to get seven shipped form Montreal, I will pass one to Nick and others.

Alhamito - Are you trying to build a complete set of steel?

Let me know so I can figure in what you need and how best to ship from SE Mi.

Thank you

Hey Matt and Burt
I am here in beautiful central upstate NY and soon am heading West for the
GMCMI rally in Indiana.
I could possibly tote the 4 good wheels West if someone can get them here to
me, or close to me.
I am near Rt 104, about 30 miles West of the N-S Rt 81 interesection with
Rts 5 & 20, in Syracuse.
Nearest 'town' on the map is Alton, NY [not much of a hamlet, just a
crossroads in the dust.].

Matt,
Yes I am trying to build a complete set of 6 or 7 steel wheels. No need to ship. I go to Newport, MI twice a year and can pick them up from you. I will be back there in December. Do you think that is enough time to accumulate a full set? Do you need any payment in advance?

Just a month ago I was trying to find a 16" wheel I tried the junk yards that I knew then a used wheel place they had one that they said had a wobble. They told me to expect most used wheels would be similar. I found a small out of the way junk yard located next to a Bordello (whore house)that had 3 wheels I bought 1 for $35 and it was straight.

Matt: not to ruffle any feathers, but if you use 16" 3/4 ton lug centered wheels on the front it will line the front wheels with the back ones without spacers. These are the straight wheels not the duelly offset. I ran this type of wheels on the front for a while with hubcaps till I got my aluminum wheels and spacers. It really drove better and you could not tell with the hubcaps on. These type wheels are also available in 16.5.

Which would you carry for a spare? Or would you carry one of each type?
And for what load is the 3/4 ton wheel rated?

Sir: the same wheel is used in the 1 ton single wheel option. As for which spare I had thought of longer studs and stack one of each but I just carried a rear and a set of tire irons. Figuired if I needed a front I would change the tire. I`ve flipped a few on big trucks by leaving the wheels mounted. I got a air hose.

I don't need payment as I have had so little success at buying anything.
I can't guaranty that I will even have a set for my self be December.

The rims that I have weigh 33# each. I'm going to see what I can do about shipping those in from Montreal.

If we could find a way to move them from Montreal without shipping (i.e. hope to get someone to relay a couple at a time) they would be a good prospect. I have looked at shipping within the U.S. for distances about 400 - 500 miles and (believe it or not) USPS parcel post was the best rate, at about $30 per rim.
Even free rims from Montreal might be too expensive if they have to be shipped.

Charles,

I hand mounted all six wheels in my garage with good tire irons. Took about
20 minutes a tire. The real trick is filling the tire with are to get it to
seat.properly. I used a good 2" cargo strap around the circumference of
the tire and removed the valve core from the Schrader valve.

Really wasn't that hard - oh, and get RuGlyde as a rubber lubricant - that
is what 99% of the tire shops used. I bought a gallon at the NAPA
warehouse, If you really get a pleasure out of mounting tires it also comes
in 55 gallon drums...
