It was reported that Kelly Springfield made fan belts (including the Autozone Duralast belts) we still being made to a true 11mm so would fit our GMCs.
Guess what?
On this trip a fan belt broke and took out the other two fan belts. I bought a 15450 at Autozone for the water pump and power steering and it says 11AV1145. I also bought a 15610 for the air conditioner and it says 11AV1550. They didn't have one to fit my alternator in stock. After installing them I decided to go back in the store and buy two more to carry as spares.
They brought two belts to the counter and one was visibly narrower than the other. That belt package said
15450
Replaces Old 15450
10AV1145
So, this means that Kelly Springfield have also gone to a narrower belt now.
I guess that if manufacturers go to a 10% narrower belt they will save 10% of the materials they use to manufacture them.
That might not matter to a small engine but to our 455 with its high torque the narrow belts just won't work properly.
So, if you go into to any shop to buy a belt be sure to take your 10 mm open end wrench with you and if it slips over the belt then it is too narrow for your GMC.

Oh great. The Kelly-Springfield brand is owned by Goodyear. I wonder if Goodyear is also doing the same thing.

Emery,
I'm wondering if this shift to thinner belts makes the double alternator pulley more attractive even if one doesn't have problems
with belts squealing.
It reduces the number of spare belts you have to carry and I wonder if running two belts to drive the alternator, water pump, and
power steering pump would wear slower.

Rob M.
