For years I have used US and NATO military ammunition cans for storage of lots of things including tools and ammunition. As an example I have one can with plastic plumbing parts. I have another with copper plumbing fittings, etc. etc. etc.
I use to be able to buy standard .50 cal cans for around $5.00 and "fat .50's for $5.50. I have one smaller .30 cal one that still has a 3.25 sticker on it.
Well now they are going for around $14 to $15 each for excellent condition standard .50 cal ones.
I found a place listing excellent ones for $8.49. There is always a downside. They use UPS and only UPS for shipping so you are going to get ripped off for shipping if you buy them.
A couple of us wanted a few of them so I ordered 6 and the bill including the UPS ripoff UPS shipping came out to $75.00. That still came out to $12.50 each including shipping.
I opened the package today and to my surprise I found that these were new manufacture. The still have the manufacturing cardboard insulators keep the paint from being scratched and the lids packed inside the cans that had never been installed.
So, I'm telling anyone interested that these are available here:
http://www.armygear.net/ag/store/ac50e.html
The also have good condition ones for a $1.00 less but you are still going to get ripped off by the same amount for UPS.
http://www.armygear.net/ag/store/search.html?bs=1&em=1&su=1&fi=products&st=db&tf=prod_group&sf=category&se=50%20Caliber%20 Cans&id=ukN29ntH
They also have sizes other than .50 cal. just look at the left column on the above page.
These are not as cheap as they were a few years back but this is a good price in today's market.

Ken,
You are right they are great storage containers, water proof and they stack
well. I went to the website and they were on sale for 25% off. Also out of
stock. I have several that fuses for 4.2" mortars came in. Identical can.
I have had them since - 1969.
Off course, they we free then. Kind of...
I'll keep my eye out for them.
Thanks for the lead.

Go back and look again. The only thing out of stock was the quantity 9 offering of the .50 cal ones which actually was not any better deal. If you order the quantity 1 ones and increase the quantity to what ever you want, they are available.
I did not thoroughly check all of the other sizes. The only sizes I use are the standard .50 cal and I have a few 7.62 / .30 cal ones.
The mortar ones are not bad also.

I will go back.
Should have picked up all I could when I had the chance - seems like back
then they were just a pain!

Actually if you live near some of the military posts, the PDO puts them up for auction is various conditions occasionally. That is where most of these come from the we eventually get.
I almost bid on a 1/4 semi load (1200) (I think it was 10 or 12 pallets) that went to $150 which was minimum bid.
I finally decided not to go through all of the work of hauling them here, categorizing them by condition, and then reselling them.
These are available at any gun show. I only posted these because they were new rather than the normal used ones.

Ken,l
I think there is an upcoming show in Northern Mississippi. I will watch for
it
The money saved on shipping will pay for admission.
Thanks,
Tom
