| Another UPS Freight Horror Story [message #141147] |

Chalk up another one for UPS Freight:
This morning I got a call from my RV appliance parts friend saying that the new refrigerator he ordered for me was going to be delivered between 1:00 and 3:00 this afternoon. I asked him to call me as soon as he saw the truck so I could head out to pick it up. By 1:45, I hadn't heard anything form him, so I called and told him I was going to head out in his direction. I know it was a little early, but I had to drive about 30 miles to the other side of the Tucson Mountains.
I got to Mike's house at about 2:30 and the fridge hadn't been delivered yet. I was invited in to wait. Finally, at 5:30, a big UPS Freight truck shows up and Mike and I head out to unload the fridge. I pull my Cherokee over behind the truck, and Mike goes over to the truck. As the driver opened the door, Mike noticed that the fridge was leaning against another crate in the trailer. When the driver brought the fridge to the rear, and loaded it onto the lift gate, I noticed that the box was badly damaged. The driver says "it's just the back", and I say "that's where all the working parts are".
We opened the box and discovered a couple of dents in the insulation...right where the cooling lines enter the back of the fridge. Up toward the top, there were a couple of bent cooling fins (more like plates) on the top coil. Overall, it didn't look too bad until I noticed the brackets holding the top coils to the back of the refrigerator were bent to the right and all but torn off.
To make a long story short (I know...too late) after driving for 45 minutes, waiting until 5:30 for a 3:00 delivery, I had to refuse the shipment (on the driver's recommendation, by the way) and drive home another 50 minutes empty handed. I was hoping to get the major part of the installation done this weekend. Now I don't have any idea when the replacement fridge will be here, or what shape it will be in when it gets here.
Frustrating and disappointing to say the least.
Just venting.

Dan,
Jeff's friend Mike, lives a couple of miles out past the Arizona, Sonora Desert Museum. You know how far that is from my house. Like I said...frustrating. A waste of a Friday afternoon.

UPS has its up side and down side.
When I worked at a computerized lathe company, we sent some fragile components out as well as some heavy bulky ones.
I had to learn to pack for the UPS hub point. The place is automated and where the arm pushes the package off the conveyor and drops it into a bin is where the damage occurs. It took a few times to figure out how to pack to get around the HUB. UPS also does not like to pay for damages and generally say the package was not packaged well enough... so we learned to pack the UPS way.
It's tough to get a package as big as a frige through any delivery service. The places like Camping World ship in their own trucks and they are a bit more careful because if they break it, they loose money. The freight guys are a bit less careful and I have thought the friges could be packed a bit better at the factory.

Larry, You're right. The fridge certainly could have been packed better by Norcold. I don't consider that an excuse for damaging it through mis-handling though. This was UPS Freight, not a brown step van local delivery truck. I have never had any issues with them.

Sir: I also had an issue with UPS (oops), Upon arrival my new Honda seats were in boxes that looked like elephants had been playing soccer with them. When I opened the boxes both seats were damaged. One had a very small hole in the leather in a hidden place and the other had a broken plastic piece. I had to get the shipper to file a damage claim since I was the reciever, they would not talk to me. They approved the one with the hole but not the one with the busted piece, so refilled, refused, refilled again and was finally approved. A lot of hastle, but I ended up with 2 new seats for nothing. I switched the sides as to put the broken piece (small crack) against the wall. No way to see it.

Well there you have it; it pays to be tenacious and perseverant!
Whenever I buy something on eBay I always send a message to the seller to "pack it carefully so the USPS/UPS/FedEx/Aussie Post
gorillas can't damage it." I find this seems to help as it kinda puts them on notice that if it arrives here damaged and not packed
properly I WILL go after them!
A fellow GMCer in the USA asked me to send him a cooktop from Australia that had a glass top. It was shipped from Canberra to Sydney
(about 180 miles) and when it arrived I was surprised that it had survived.
It took me well over an hour to re-pack it and when it arrived the GMCer noted that it took him half an hour to unpack it. Needless
to say it was in perfect shape when it arrived.
I think a lot of damaged shipments are due to the fact that quite a few people that work in shipping departments just don't give a
damn!
