I own a Taurus PT-111 in 9mm that I bought after I became disabled. Our police chief strongly suggested that I get one. He said that since I couldn't run or hide quickly, being armed was the best plan. I chose the Taurus because it is a small-frame semi-auto that shoots quite accurately, the price was right (<$500), and it came with a very effective built-in trigger lock. I later learned that the trigger lock is available on almost all Taurus guns, including revolvers. The Judge series also has it available. I'd recommend the Judge or the PT-1911 .45 ACP. It's a good copy of the Colt 1911 Match Grade for a LOT less money.
A 12-guage pump shotgun would be another good choice, but with the tight confines of most GMCs, it may not be practical. However, the distinctive sound that a pump shotgun makes when the slide is racked is universally known & feared as a forewarning of impending doom world-wide. Sometimes a good dose of fear is worth more than any gun.

On the last trip back from California this spring my daughter and I stopped in some town in NM. I forget which one it was. We parked in a lot about 1/2 block from Oreilly's and I walked down to O'reilly's to get some parts.
While I was gone, a drunk came by and tried to get in the coach with my daughter inside. My daughter who regularly carries a Makarov .380, unholstered her Makarov and met him at the door as it opened. I came out of the store just in time to see the drunk making a hasty exit away from the coach.
You do not need to shoot someone. You just need to intimidate them until they leave if you can't leave on your own.
