well, i replaced it, and the shimmying is slightly better, but still doesn't seem like the old smooth ride.
one definite symptom: when taking a slow sharp turn (parking lot, 5mph to 15mph) there's a definite bit of "wiggle"...
rhythmic... like every couple times the wheels turn.
don't see anything jumping out at me underneath... though i know the A-frame bushings are overdue
for replacement. maybe the alignment is way out of whack?
CVs were rebuilt 2 years ago.
hmmmm...
any clues appreciated, thanks!

Greg,
It is your CV joints. The steering shock was just masking the real
problem.

Greg, if it wobbles the steering wheel 3 times per wheel revolution, it is
your inboard CV joints. Be sure and check, particularly on the driver side,
that your bolts that hold the CV to the flange are tight. They are known to
come loose. If the steering wheel wobbles at a higher frequency, than I
would suspect the outboard CV joints. Easy to check. If the boots are
intact, they can survive a long time if you are easy on the throttle. If you
do burnouts, particularly with the wheels turned, it will severely shorten
the CV life. Jus' Sayin. <Grin>

WD0AFQ wrote on Sat, 10 September 2011 20:39 | I say Steve and James have your problem assessed. Check all of those bolts. If they are tight then its a joint. I know of at least two coaches that have lost an axle and it ain't pretty when you have that thing swinging loose in there.

If it's once per rev it could be tire ply separation...

Greg,
Could those joints just be full of Playa dust?
My brother took a SOB up there and said it was a 'low wind year'

Here are some photos of the unit on my 1977 Palm Beach.
Replacement dampers are Autozone part number 14010 (current at $25 locally),
Delco 509-5 and Moog SSD55 ($37 on Amazon).
