What have you guys done in regards to security? What suggestions does one hve to harden agmc against B&E? Does anyone use an alarm? If so which one and what else has one done to secure the coach?

First we live out in the country with lots of neighbors who have guns.
We all look after one and other.
Second on the road I have a hand gun that my wife and I know how to use.
We have a shotgun in our GMC.
We also have a can of Wasp Spray by the door "50 State Legal".
Wasp spray sells for $3.00 at Home Dump or Lowe's.
Bottom line we have never had a problem.

At home I leave the keys in the ignition and have no problem.
On the road I have Jasper and Clyde backed up by Smith and Wesson.

Door is locked and it sits behind a gate (unlocked) at home.
On the road I have no gun or wasp spray.
Bottom line - never had a problem, either.

I haven't painted my coach and the mini-blinds look awful. The drapes around the front are old and ugly.

I can't imagine anyone would look at my coach and think there was anything of value in it.

Security by obscurity.

1. We have Texas plates so it's obvious we're armed and dangerous. ;)

2. Upon arrival, one of us lays down on the ground in front of the door
and the other uses chalk to outline the body.

3. Scatter a few spent shells around.

4. Lock coach, and go on our merry way.

Works for us.

Haha I love this one the best, but might not always be practical in my situation. While I'm in the coach I'm not worried, a remington 870 magnum with a birds head grip and 6 rounds of 00 buck with 6 more ready to go on a sidecar, and å pice of Glock perfection in 10mm are usually handy. So as Mr T might say "I pitty the fool" who tries to enter if I'm there...

I'm looking for security options while away from the rig. I like the looking like crap option my rig does look old, the rockstars on it are about the nicest looking thing. But I could call that a passive security system. What options available for a more active one?

In my mind this is a very good question.

When I traveled to Walt Disney World from Chicago Northern Burbs, There is a rest area I really enjoyed stopping at for the night just before Georga on 24 and is an island on Nickajac Lake. It is quite the place, very nice and quiet, perhaps too quiet. I have been told by many people NOT to stop at the rest areas overnight now.

I travel with a can of Wasp Spray, for the Wasps,,,, but it is not legal in Michigan and they will search and ticket you.

I also have three of the barkiest dogs you ever heard.

I have not carried a gun but has been on my mind.

I want to put in an alarm system but the dogs seem to take care of that.

I considered Pepper Spray but that is becoming a search item for law enforcement.

I know the GMC needs something for when we are away at the parks or restaurants, the GMC wont yell for help by itself. THE GMC sits there with those huge windows that will break easily and it has a vehicle door look that the creeps have learned how to open with a pick. She is not the most secure object that has been created by GM. My thought would be to put movement detectors from the Dash aimed back. In the 70's there were such alarms that detected a body near the vehicle and would trigger a message for you to step away. I wonder if that would work if connected to the body frame???? that is if still available. Perhaps all you need is a nice, friendly PIT BULL with lots of sharp teeth! Can't be much worse than holding a gun and the Pit Bull will announce himself when someone rattles the windows or doors......I am always thinking about security.

In my eyes, the laws do not favor the one who shoots the creep trying to rob and kill you, you will be prosecuted if you fire a gun, if you injure the creep, if you kill the creep. The creep was just a bystander that was attacked, in the eyes of the law..

What I have heard....

So you can't travel in Michigan with wasp spray or you can't buy it?

MY GMC sits in my driveway unlocked. I figure if someone wants to break in that bad I don't want them to damage the door as well. It leaks bad enough already.

When we first started camping with a trailer years ago we paid little heed to safety. We gave little thought to staying overnight in roadside rests even outside of Detroit which we did many times around Michigan. About the only weapon I could have rounded up on short notice might have been a frying pan. Needless to say I would not think of that now. Have times changed so much or have I just gotten wiser in my old age.

I worry more about vandalism than robbery.  The coach is normally either at the house or at a dog show.  Serious thieves don't bother dog shows... the RVs there are full of teeth and noise, and much like the GMCers, evrybody pretty much knows everybody else at least by sight.  And since I'm a hobbyist as opposed to a threat to the pros, vandalism isn't a great concern.
In most states, a long gun is by definition not concealable, and consequently in most places it can be carried.  You can get a reading by calling the Attorney General's office of the State in question.
My long gun (Remington Wingmaster) often travels in the truck at night with me if I have to go fix something, our towers are not always in the best areas.  If anyone wants to be troublesome, I can do business with them.

The only problem that we have encountered was when we were in North Carolina
and someone took my wife's purse ~
It only contained some personal items and &1.25 in change
{she had her billfold and keys with her}
2 Nights Later She Saw Her Purse By The Front Bumper
With Everything Still Intact
PLUS A CRISP TEN DOLLAR BILL ~

Every since then I have encouraged her to leave it out in plain sight ~

Joe,

Did she have any credit cards in it?

If she did wouldn't it be a great idea if you were a credit card scammer to steal a the purse and record the name, number, and CVCC
number on the back of every card and then give it back to the owner with $10 in it?

Hehe my birdshead 870 is a scant 29 inches, and conceals easily under a duster Smile

That said I did have some ahole tag one of my windows once. Thankfully acetone and a razor got rid of it all

What have you guys done in regards to security? What suggestions does one have to harden a gmc against B&E? Does anyone use an alarm? If so which one and what else has one done to secure the coach?

Go get a concealed carry permit in Georgia. It looks like it is $30.00 for 5 years. I carry two permits and both are honored in Georgia. Then you will not have to lug a long gun around. In some place people feel someone carrying a log gun as threatening.

AN interesting side note: Carrying a loaded long gun around in this state is not allowed. So concealed is the only way to go. Many states consider a loaded gun in a RV without a permit OK as long it is not accessible to the driver. The rules change state by state. Check here:

http://handgunlaw.us/

If you are going to a state that does not recognize your Georgia permit, get a Florida or Utah permit. They are recognized in most blue and some red states. Only two states do not issue any concealed licenses. Illinois and Wisconsin plus D.C.

You can still transport a weapon through those few states if it is unloaded and locked in a hard sided case. I frequently transport a hand gun to and through Midway and Ohare airports. I check them in on flights that I'm leaving on out of there. You can also transport and check ammunition the same way.

I stop at that rest stop, but haven't overnighted, every trip North - maybe once every two months.  Never had a problem.

Couple of points to ponder if somebody does come in:

1.  Kill him, don't wound him.  Then your side of the story is the only side.
2.  Your mantra is "He said he would kill me.  I feared for my life"

I am working on this plan as well.

In my eyes, the laws do not favor the one who shoots the creep trying to rob and kill you, you will be prosecuted if you fire a gun, if you injure the creep, if you kill the creep.  The creep was just a bystander that was attacked, in the eyes of the law..

What I have heard....
