I cannot find any info on how to replace the ignition switch. I forgot how to search all those great picture shows and stuff. My coach came with no key. The piece with the lock in it pulls right out of the column. There are no tumblers in this lock so I will buy a new one with a key. Is there any trick to reinstallation.
Thanks

MIKE,

Thanks for that wealth of information. I had these manuals when I had muy other 2 coaches but this one came with only an owners manual, (which is invaluable and I appreciate it).

I down loaded the X7525 but there is no page 592. Instead I found "Ignition switch" under Switches on page 12-16. That page directed me to the Steering Section 9 and I found some drawings of the ignition switch. However the only instruction it gives is "Replace the switch", with no instructions as to how to do that. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks

Bob, If the original lock can be pulled out without removing the horn assembly you may be able to install a new one without too much trouble. I had same issue but it turned out the cast ratchet buried in the top of the column that operates the actual switch at the base of the column was broken through fatigue.
In my case i couldn't remove the lock so had to strip down entire column, not a task i would want to repeat, unless you have a problem like i did a new lock barrel should just press in.
Have you tried operating the lower column switch by pulling up/down on the steel rod that runs from top of column? that would tell you for sure that it is just the lock barrel at fault.
Regards Denis.

Bob,

I have a hardcopy of MM X-7525 in front of me and find that on page 9-54
Steering - TILT COLUMN OVERHAUL - DISASSEMBLY OF STEERING COLUMN starts and
finishes on page 9-58. ASSEMBLY OF STEERING COLUMN starts there and finishes
on page 9-61. They do cover removal and installation of the key lock as well
as the switch.

I have never messed with a GMC steering column and therefore can't provide
any further info.

I would suggest you print them out and review them step by step.

Regards,
Rob M.

From page 592 step 27 or section 9-60 step 27 in the above referenced manual:

27. To install lock, hold lock cylinder sleeve and
rotate knob clockwise against stop. Insert cylinder
into cover bore with key on cylinder sleeve aligned
to keyway in housing. Push in to abutment of cylinder
and sector. Rotate knob counterclockwise, maintaining
a light push inward on cylinder, until drive
section of cylinder mates with drive shaft. Push in
until retainer pops into groove. This locks cylinder
into cover. Check freedom of rotation.

Bob, One other thing i forgot to mention, when you replace the lock barrel the key has to be inserted, also ensure you have lock turned to the off position if not the only way to remove the new lock would be removal of wheel/horn assembly, not difficult but a PITA.

Bob,

http://www.gmceast.com/technical/Sowers_Steering_Column_Upgrade_Repair.pdf

Is a great slide presentation that will show you how to get down to the lock
if you can't just just replace the cylinder (which I doubt). We're going to
present that slide show, and perhaps a physical demonstration at Goshen
(your excuse to make that LONG excursion).

The use of terminology can be confusing. This discussion is about the ignition lock. The ignition switch is located on the top of the column 10 inches or so below the ignition lock.

Bob

whoever told you to look at page 592 was correct but the pages in the book are not numbered that way. If you are using Adobe Acrobat to read the pdf file, at the top of the screen Acrobat shows pages 1 - 860. If you enter 592 instead of the 1 it will take you to page 9-60 of the manual. That is page 592 or 860 in the pdf file.

...while you're at it... Maybe this would be a good time to swap in a newer steering Column with a multifunction stalk.

I want to thank Dennis and all the others who responded to my question about my ignition lock assembly. I went to Autozone and purchased a lock assembly manufactured by LockSmart. It is part number LC14260. In my case the entire lock assembly was missing from my column so all I had to do was make sure the switch was in the off position, insert the new assembly with a little twisting motion and it snapped right into place.
Thanks again everyone and how do we add this number the parts manual?
