Why cut the frame? Take four screws out of the top frame over the radiator, lift the old radiator over the frame to the front at the bottom and drop it out. Takes less time to do than to describe. Putting in a new one (aluminum or rebuilt old one) is just as easy as long as you push it up straight. Cock it and the protrusions on the top of the new radiator will tend to drag on the sides of the frame. Be sure to put the rubber mounts back in place so the new radiator is grounded only by the trans cooler lines to avoid electrolysis issues.

Ok I've looked at both Gene's way, seems simple enough, and I've heard for years that the "way to do this" is to cut the radiator frame. Either way seems pretty straightforward so what's the advantage of cutting the frame?
Also, if/when I ever have to replace my radiator I will replace it with one of Gene Dotson's aluminum units. Is one procedure better than the other when retrofitting an aluminum unit?

So that's why all the talk on the earlier thread about grounding and electrolysis? Starting to make sense now. How much is the applied gmc one and more importantly, what would you do jim? (B.t.w. I haven't had any luck with surplus oe air cleaner tins but I'm still lookin)

If you know what a West Coast Radiator is , you know why they named it that.
Few of the smart people got the 500 aluminum ones in and are
scratching their head as to why they are not cooling so well.
Gene Dotson and Jim Buchanan did some research before they went that route.
As long as you take proper precaution to ground them, they will last.

Remove the front grille, and the radiator can come out the front of the coach. That's how Marc did it on his diesel installation. Still have to un-bolt and remove the frame as a whole assembly.

In the marine world when aluminum fuel tanks are used only stainless steel fittings are to be used to attach any other fittings to tanks, no brass, copper or bronze. This same rule should be applied to your aluminum radiator, No brass, bronze or copper should be directly connected to aluminum, there should be a steel fitting between radiator and any brass or copper, fittings or lines, preferably ss.

Thanks all who chimed in! I am waiting for performance to bring my rad back so I can get other quotes as there are a few radiator artisans left in the area. They were supposed to bring it back today but it never showed.....

Asked how the tanks looked, said great condition, boiled them out should last another 30 some years. Do your research...get a good value...take the doubters at face value. It isn't always necessary to spend a bucket of money to get the job done.
