Does anyone have direct experience removing the bearings from the Wallace 3
bearing front hubs, or have plans for a bearing puller for them? I am
repairing a 1977 Eleganza II 26 footer that is equipped with them. The front
brake rotors are beyond service limits and need to be replaced, therefore
the bearings need to be pulled from the hub. The conventional Thoma type
pullers will not work due to the hub's design. All responses will be
appreciated. Thanks

Jim,
If I had that problem, I'd call Bill Bramlett or Ken Rose. I don't know if
either of them has ever touched a Wallace hub, but their the best candidates
I know.

Ken, thank you for your timely response. One of our GMC Cascaders who has
Wallace hubs on his coach made his own puller for the hubs and is passing
through Salem on Sat & will drop it off so I can use it. Problem solved
thanks to the GMC Forum. Ain't it great!!.

could replace them with a "one ton" VII kit , for about the same
effort, which has new :
hubs,
knuckles
rotors
cv joints
boots
calipers
bearings
bushings
and will not need an more service for over 200,000 miles ;>)

Gene, what I would do if it were mine. The Owner is "fairly frugal" and only
wants to replace the rotors that were eaten up by running the pads down to
the metal backings. He wanted to just replace the linings on the tore up
rotors and I refused to do that, so he agreed to the rotors. Life is full of
choices, I guess.

Jim,
I just looked at this brochure on Bdub's website and noted that the Wallace
hubs have a grease "cert."
http://www.bdub.net/publications/Wallace_Bearings/Wallace_Bearings1.htm
In fact it appears that they have TWO grease zerks; one is located in the
housing outboard of the third bearing (see photos Unit 1 and Unit 3). The
second is located in the knuckle (see photo Unit 2).
It seems to me that this is better setup for greasing the bearings than a
single zerk in the knuckle. The zerk in the third bearing housing would
flush old grease out of the third bearing and outer OEM bearing. You then
connect the grease gun to the zerk in the knuckle.
However, I can't tell if there is enough clearance between the brake rotor
and the fitting to get a grease gun adapter in there. It stands to reason
that you should be able to do that or why bother to put the zerk there.
Regards,
Rob M.

Jim,
You've got a GMC there with the Wallace hubs that you're going to
disassemble, could you take a picture of them and post them as it would
clear this up.

Rob

Rob,
I don't know what that is but it sure looks like the zerk fitting. I know
mine has one fitting and it is about in this location as shown in foto IF I
remember correctly.
