We are dropping off one of our college students in Bloomington, IN and then
heading for NE WI. I've decided to have nothing to do with Chicago (been
there, done that) and am planning on picking up Northbound US39 in
Bloomington,IL. Tentative overnight at Lowden State Park. (Oregon, IL)
Are there any "Do not miss this" attractions on 39?
Thanks,

Russ

Russ,

There is one that you should not miss at Baraboo, WI, (worth the 30 mile diversion). The Circus Museum may no longer have shows running, but just the wagon barn is worth the stop. Want to see the first retractable stairs?? If the shows are running, plan to lose a days travel.

If you are going up toward Green Bay, then mark Oshkosh for the EAA museum if you care about such things.

As long as you are going that way, see if you can make Peshtigo. The Peshtigo Fire museum has very little because everything burned in the massive fire. There is one display cabinet and lots of news paper clippings. 2400 square miles were burned and they guess that there were between 12 & 2400 dead. This was at the same time as the Chicago fire, but since telegraph poles all burned down, they didn't get any press.

Enjoy the excursion.

Matt

There is not much you will miss up that route other than there are no tolls other that one at Rockford. I do not think you will miss not having to pay tolls. Watch the speed limits closely for RV's and Trucks. They love to write tickets to out of state RV's and trucks.

My wife was assisting the Bloomington IBM office one day when the Manager called her in and tried to get both her and I to take a transfer there. Laurie refused the jobs for both of us. When asked what we had where we lived compared to Bloomington, Laurie responded "TREES".

That same manager hired both of us a few years later in Indianapolis for an 11 state mobility project.

There will be lots of corn on your route and a large wind farm north of I-80.

If you're going that far north before turning easy, you could try to see the Wisconsin Dells. Certainly very touristy, but kind of fun to ride the ducks and see some of the surrounding scenery.

Also, Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesen is a neat stop if you enjoy architecture.

Illinois doesn't have too much to offer along that route, though there is the Blackhawk statue on the east side of the Rock River near Oregon, and you can also drive by the nuke plant. The wind farm is kind of neat to see, but that's about it in Illinois.

For a very Informal camp out I would normally suggest the Illinois beach State Park CampGround. Power and Electric, and you have to move to Dump.
I do no believe they have recovered from the Storms that tore us up. The Hotel and Restaurant is open but is also going through recovery.

If you will be up by the Baraboo Circus Museum, if you have the time you may like to see the HOUSE ON THE ROCK in the same general area. The tour is a lot of walking with a stop at a commesary midway. Collections of many many things including the house that was built up top of a rock clif.. It is amazing if you can get by the commercialization.

Have a good trip.

Russell,

The statue at the park is quite impressive...

The Statue

Lorado Taft, who created the 50-foot statue as a tribute to Native Americans, is said to have thought of the figure one evening as he and other members of the Eagles' Nest colony stood gazing at the view from the bluffs. According to a story attributed to Taft, he and his colleagues tended to stand with their arms folded over their chests. The pose made him think of the Native Americans who were so reverent of the beauty of nature and who probably had enjoyed the same view.

With the help of John G. Prasuhn, a young sculptor of the Chicago Art Institute, Taft created a figure almost 50 feet tall, including a six-foot base. Reinforced with iron rods, the hollow statue is eight inches to three feet thick. The interior is accessible to park employees through a door at the base. The outer surface composed of cement, pink granite chips and screenings, is three inches thick.

Native American StatueThe figure is estimated to weigh 100 tons and is thought to be the second largest concrete monolithic statue in the world. Although Taft dedicated the statue to Native Americans, it has become commonly associated with Black Hawk.

I just realized that I-39 goes right by Starved Rock State Park in Lasalle/Peru as well. It's a pretty area to drive around and see, right off of I-39, and then it's not too far a drive to get to Ottawa, IL for your overnight stay.

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for all of the additional choices! If we manage to stay on schedule,
we will try to take advantage of some of these...
