The government's solution to ethanol being a problem in our "older" engines is to change out all the components that the fuel comes in contact with. Something needs changing, but it ain't the components in our engines....

On second thought, I think we are already using 15% here in Phoenix. It hasn't affected my outboard motor yet, but then I run all the gas out of it when trailering the boat. My GMC has all new fuel lines, and a reman carb that I *Hope* has upgraded rubber where applicable.

It has affected my new Toro Lawnmower. I rarely use it, but when the yard guys failed to show up last week, I pulled it out to mow and low and behold, no start. New fuel, fuel to the carb, fuel in the float bowl, but no joy. Starts when I squirt gas in to the carb, but then dies. Killed the little battery trying to start it. At least It has electric start. The damn thing has only been sitting for about 3 months, maybe less. In the winter, I mow in between the yard guys every two weeks, but it sits in the summer largely unused.

They should give us two types of fuel, "Regular" and "Blended" and give us a special shaped filler nozzle and allow us to retrofit older vehicles. That would be like the old Leaded and Unleaded days.

I highly doubt you are using E15 in Phoenix in regular gas. The proposed rules for E15 right now call for separate pumps and tanks from E10 to prevent problems with non-compatible vehicles. Arizona law states that they must inform you that ethanol is in the gas anywhere the concentration is greater than 1% and the sticker probably tells you it is available in concentrations up to 10%.

I wouldn't worry about E15 outside the corn belt yet. It will be very expensive for stations to implement a separate pumping infrastructure. It's why outside the corn belt E85 is still fairly sparse.

That being said, the future could certainly hold E15 for all of us.

We're still E10 (I think) here in Central Texas. Haven't seen any signs on the pumps to indicate otherwise.

We are starting to hear about E85 in Northwest Ohio.

A lot of car people are running it in high boost super and/or turbocharged engines. Almost a throw back to Alcohol dragsters of the 70's.

The biggest "GOTCHA" is the mileage penalty. About 20%... and of course that's not figured into the CAFE standards rammed down Detroit's throat.

That, and Cadillac introduced the ETS today. Rah. Electrics all around, and no performance.

To preserve my aging lawn equipment, I've been going up to the airport and getting 100LL for the lawnmowers, tractor and snowblower.

No ethanol there.

A station about 4 miles from me has some new
fancy pumps that dispense E10, E15, E85 plus
87, 89, and 91 Octane pure gasoline fuel. A
single nozzle colored yellow is used for all of
the Ethanol blends and a nozzle colored black
for the "good stuff."

Shades of Sunoco back in the 50s and 60s that
had five (or maybe more) Octane options from
one nozzle!

Sunoco may have CLAIMED to have the highest octane
but a lot of my acquaintances didn't trust it. Almost
everybody said to NOT use Sunoco oil!

My opinion was that AMOCO had the best gasoline. In
1967 I was at Keesler AFB, MS and my 65 289 Mustang
got to the point it would not break 3000 rpm without
stumbling. After three tanks of AMOCO premium (about
100 Octane, I believe) it was back to an effortless
5000 rpm. I think the on-base fuel may have been
Chevron, but after 44 years I can't really be certain.

I worked at My Uncle's Amoco station in 1965-1960, Amoco high test was
"guaranteed' to be a minimum of 100 Octane, Shell premium touted the same
tune and yes Sunoco 260 was supposed to be the top octane "street racers"
fuel. I did have a buddy from high school that worked at the local Sunoco.
As far as the 260 fuel - he said only buy it on Friday and Saturday. He
claimed it wasn't always 101 octane, He would run his Plymouth Barracuda at
the local drag track with a completely stock 440CI with the factory six pack
(three deuces). He fueled up on Friday night and then would park the car
until he took it to the track on Saturday.

I ran Amoco high test in my 1956 Tbird at the time.

Interesting.  My old Roadrunner (68 Hemi) loved Sunoco 260, wouldn't run on Amoco white gas without knocking.  Liked Standard and Gulf Crest (In those days, Crest was the highest octane Gulf) and Pure premium.

On the west coast, "White Pump Chevron & Standard" had 105 octane. All the
high performance cars around here used it. There may have been similar
octane available at the Union 76 Purple pumps as well.

Chris,

They introduced 10% ethanol regular petrol here last year but you could
still buy regular petrol without it. The last time I fueled up at a Shell
station I was forced to buy it because there was no regular petrol without
ethanol.

Rob M.

Live in North FLorida. The gas pumps have stickers saying "up to 10% Ethanol". Now they have cut the part of the sticker off saying "up to", so yep so it's now 10%......

Worries me, i have lots of lawn care stuff here, i have a lawn care businness. More and more often stuff will not start or runs for for a while then stops. If i get gas from a different gas station the stuff runs perfectly. so what is going on.
Despite the checks that go on , i would love to get the gas analysed, to see what is REALLY in the gas !!!!
