My wife and I will be bringing a GMC from Boston to San Francisco next month and I would appreciate route suggestions, places to stay and eat, things to see and routes to avoid.

We both enjoy museums and historical sites, Civil War sites and national parks. I like automotive and aviation museums.

We prefer to use secondary roads and would like to avoid congestion and toll roads.

We will not have a toad so would like RV Parks or campgrounds that have easy access or public transportation to points of interest.

First leg will be to Philadelphia area ( we will bypass NYC area as we expect to get back there next spring) then down to Washington DC.
Expect to stay at Cherry Point RV Park in Maryland as suggested in another thread.
May continue south from there or may turn west toward Kentucky and Tennesee. Not sure yet. Depends on the most interesting recomendations we get.

All suggestions will be appreciated

I will second the Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg museum suggestion of Ken's. It is in Auburn, Indiana and has to be the best auto museum in the country. We stayed at the KOA just across the highway from there. Auburn provided free WiFi in town too.

If you get near Memphis go to Graceland (really) and Sun Records downtown.

The "Skyline Drive" (part of the "Blue Ridge Parkway") through Shenandoah National Park, in Northern Virginia, is fabulous. There are several RV friendly campgrounds along that route also.

We recently brought our new 77 Kingsley from Chicago to Vancouver BC.
Travelled on 90 but detoured to Cody Wyoming - Buffalo Bill museum -
Excellent.
then thru Yellowstone - another must. In South Dakota - stop at Murdo for
the Pioneer Auto Museum www.*pioneerauto*show.com/ - you can stop at the
Corn Palace on 90 but really if you miss it you are not missing much. Also
look for 1880 Town - where Dancing with Wolves was filmed.

Safe travels

Hey Gene
Try to hit Dayton, Ohio.
The national Air Force museum is there.
It is not to be missed.

Several of the largest 'quonset' style buildings ever built, all in a row,
chock full of airplanes/spacecraft and 'stuff'.
Ever seen a real true ME 109 next to a Jap Zero, a P-38, P-51 and B-17?
One row or so from a replica of the first Wright Bros plane.

And try to get time for free the bus tour over to the Wright Patterson AFB
site [adjacent] which has the collection of all the Air Force Ones, with
touchy-feely access and walk thrus.
All free.
On site parking, on site cafeteria and great souvenier shop and all the
comforts you would need on site.
Make it an all day affair.
You'll want to go back.

Two Wallyworlds nearby too.

George DV

Gene,

Do you mean Cherry Hill RV Campground in College Park, Md?
If so it is a good campground site for you and on the public bus line into DC.

Gene, Bob and I second the recommendation to go to Yellowstone. We were
just there and toured the park and it's wonders for three days running and
could have stayed longer. We're in Deadwood, SD now and are really enjoying
it. Wouldn't mind coming back here again. If you should be going through
Oregon, their state parks are beautiful everywhere with full hookups and
very reasonable. We especially like the Oregon Coast. Have a fantastic
trip.

I'm in Toronto, Ontario Canada, and made a specific trip to Dearborn Michigan to see the Henry Ford Museum. If your trip takes you anyehere near there I would say it's a "must" see, and visit Greenfield Village while you are there. At least a very full bay or maybe 2 days.

I'll second going through Cody and seeing the museums-within-a-museum.
From there you could drive through the eastern entry point into
Yellowstone. My preference is to head south from there and go through
Jackson Hole and see the Tetons. For a fun evening in Jackson go to Bar J
Chuckwagon Supper & Western Music Show. It's the best of the lot.

If you do go to Jackson Hole do not go via the pass. There are 10 percent grades up and down on the Idaho side if you take the wrong route.

All,
I've been to the Chuckwagon show it is well worth the money. An evening well spent. If you stop in West Yellowstone, MT take in the Playhouse for an entertaining evening. JWID.

When I plan a trip, I get out the Atlas and pick a route. Then I get on the compooter and look up each city and town that I will be passing through or near. I also look for ghost towns in that state. I've seen some wonderful sights.
Sometimes a trip of 3 or 4 days turns in to a week or more.
I like it.

And if you get anyplace even remotely close to Chicago, spend at least a day at the Museum of Science and Industry.  And if you haven't been there in three or four years,go back.  They change enough to do it again.  And again. And again.

Speaking of Chi town, head out to Oak Park and check out Frank Lloyd
Wright's home and studio. Then take the walking tour to look as the various
homes he built in the area. Make sure you include the Unitarian Church.

He was recognized by the American Institute of Architects as "the greatest
American architect of all time".
