A while back someone argued that with a GMC a TOAD is more trouble than it's worth.

Obviously that solution won't work for everyone but I decided to check the math.

For some time now I've been messing around wih a spreadsheet to answer various car questions, gas versus diesel, hybrid, etc.

check out the file here (requires MS Excel or equivalant)

If the link doesn't open Excel file this is the address;

http://oldrv.net/spreadsheets/

At the bottom there is a section on TOAD versus NO TOAD.

I would be gateful for feedback.

Nice, so it
s $45 cheaper not to pull the toad!

Oh and you forgot the cost of the tow bar/tow plate
and I won't mention the wear and tear of the toad...

Interesting that you say you get 12 mpg with TBI and 10 mpg without.

Most of us that have installed a TBI system on our GMC have found no incrrease in mileage but have done it for the many other reasons and benefit that it gives.

I'm sorry, i don't "GET" anything, i have never done those mods or pulled a toad.

I just did the math for you. Key in your own numbers and make your own decisions.

I guessed at all those numbers. I am very interested in hearing what people enter and what answers they come up with.

Not to mention the wear and tear on the GMC when you are using it for local travel instead of the convenience of the Toad.

We will gladly to continue to pay a premium to toll our toad. We have had to drive a few hundred miles back home when losing our engine or our transmission over the years.
The peace of mind of having the toad when we need it is worth a lot more than you could attempt to document on a spreadsheet.

We probably should not call them "toads" or "toweds", but "lifeboats".
Or, to avoid the bad impression that might convey, "dinghies". :-)

Saving money is certainly not the only criteria- I mean, this is supposed to be fun, right?

But we often justify decisions based on what we think they cost.

I'll be pleased to share mine with you.  Toad appears end of the month.  And, unless the mileage really goes to hell, I'll keep it going.  The only time the toad rides is when the venue I'm headed for has no hookup RV sites.  I can't trust the genset on a hot day, and I've a coated dog in there.  So the toad schleps us to the show site and back.  When there's electric at the show site, no toad required.  Toad is a '91 Jetta diesel, no turbo.  Cost was free.  Maintenance isn't great, it will see very few miles,  Maybe a hundred tio insure it.  Cost per mile will be terrible though.  It is purely a necessity.
For starters, battery for the toad was $74, towbar was $59, $15 for tail light switches..  It won't go to Chattanooga next month, it won't go to S Atlanta next week.  It will go to Orlando in December.

A friend offered me a Chinese built motor scooter.  If I didn't have the dog to worry about, I'd hang it off the back of the coach on a couiple of davits.  It would look suave.

Dave,

I think your spreadsheet is a GREAT tool, thanks for spending the time
creating it.

Having said that I'd say for myself and possibly quite a few other folks
here the GMC is a hobby that they're passionate about and cost is a minor
consideration. If they can afford it they buy it.

I KNOW that I will NEVER recoup what I've put into the two GMC's I have and
that's OK.

Regards,
Rob M.

Again, i just inserted the formulas. I think i actually made this spreadsheet during the gas spike following Katrina. Over the years I referred to it for different auto purchase decisions and sometimes i may have keyed in erroneous numbers.

It's just a tool. It's less applicable on this board because ya'll are pretty smart and people here have considered other intangibles in making their choices.

The Avalanche would probably cost me $40,000 or more and
bring on seven years of payments. The Explorer has been
paid off for over five years. Any vehicle that is paid
off is TRULY your best one for real economy!

That Explorer (Sport Trac) is the best car I have ever owned, and I have owned a lot. I think it just needs a tune-up. I used to get 18, then it dropped to 16 when we got Oxygenated fuel, but 13-14 lately, something's just not right.

I truly cannot find a suitable replacement for it. I've had full size trucks, and today's seem so bulky compared with the older ones.

I Do like the Avalanche, but the Ford is paid for. I'll probably get a car and keep the truck for just the things I need it for. Probably a convertible.

Thanks for the spreadsheet.  I put in my numbers and on a purely fuel cost basis I find a break even of from 250 to 350 miles for the home to destination and 100 miles on towd.  I found only 1.5 mpg hit from towing my 3000 pound ford probe to 2 mpg towing my 4000 pound jeep.  Results varied based on a lot of factors including speed (slower with towd), gear ratio (towing with 3.70 was better than towing with 3.07 gearing.)

The non-economic factors such as breakdown security, stopping safety, amount of high density traffic on the trip, convenience, will there be much travel off road at destination, wear and tear, the need to travel faster, the attitude of the boss, etc. play a bigger role than the fuel cost.

I get 8.8mpg with carburator and gearing at 3.7 with no towd at 58 mph on flat land.  Add a towd and it is 7.5 at 3,000 pounds and 6.8 at 4,000 pounds.

A while back someone argued that with a GMC a TOAD is more trouble than it's worth.

Obviously that solution won't work for everyone but I decided to check the math.

For some time now I've been messing around wih a spreadsheet to answer various car questions, gas versus diesel, hybrid, etc.

check out the file http://oldrv.net/spreadsheets/CARS-2.xls (requires MS Excel or equivalant)

If the link doesn't open Excel file this is the address;

http://oldrv.net/spreadsheets/

At the bottom there is a section on TOAD versus NO TOAD.

I would be gateful for feedback.
