I may be alone in this, but I think his is a fanastic development.
Actually, Coast Guard Air Station Broolyn operated out of Floyd Bennet until the mid 90's
Between the Park Service and New Yorks Finest (launching helicopters), i think it would be a very safe place to see New York from.

And if you are going to Washington go to Greenbelt national park for camping.
http://www.nps.gov/gree/index.htm
Here is a teaser about the facilities: I have stayed there, and it is nice.
Camp in an urban oasis for just $16 per night.
The park accepts only cash or checks. We do not accept credit cards.
The Greenbelt Park campground offers 174 campground sites with hot showers and bathroom facilities. Park rangers and campground hosts are available to maximize your camping experience.
There are no electrical or water hookups in the campground.
Check out time is 12 Noon.
The campground is open all year round.

I've been to cherry Hill (last year). Nice place. Clean, family atmosphere. Easy access to public transportation. A little pricey compared to where we usually stay, but still nice. Make sure you have reservations.
Also went to Liberty Harbor on same trip. Not quite as nice. Shower room was scary, dirty and dark. More like a parking lot with an electric hook up. No water or sewer hook ups. Almost the same price as cherry hill. Again, make sure you have reservations. Oh, and FYI, it's a longer walk than it looks to where you get on the ferry to liberty island.
Just my opinion, please take it for what's it's worth (nothing!)

Rob,
Here's the one that Emery Stora referred me to:
Cherry Hill Park
9800 Cherry Hill Road
College Park, MD 20740
Tel: 800-801-6449
301-937-7116
Email: info@cherryhillpark.com
Website: http://www.cherryhillpark.com/index.cfm
Comments: Nice park; great access to public transport to get into the city.
Since we don't have a towd (yet) we stay at RV parks that are easily
accessible to public transport.
Regards,
Rob M.

Marsha,
Interesting, when Helen and I stayed at Liberty Harbor RV Park two years ago
(or was it three) the spot we had both water and electricity but as you
noted no sewer hookup. There was a dump spot with easy access, however.
The showers and laundry were fine; sounds like its gone downhill since we
were there.
I agree the walk to the ferry was quite a hike. The walk to the PATH subway
was 5 blocks though.
We got a 10% discount (can't remember if it was Good Sam or FMCA) and we
stayed there for five days for less than what it would probably cost you for
ONE night at a hotel in NYC.
You are 100% correct regarding reservations; we couldn't get in when we
wanted to and wound up staying at a Wal-Mart lot in Jersey City somewhere
the night before.
Good that you posted this people can check it out before they check in.
Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,
When were you and Helen at Liberty Harbor. I'm putting together a write up
to post. Also, how would you rate the facility and personnel. It sounds
very handy and OK for seeing the Big Apple. One doesn't always need trees
and grass to campout.
